Reminder that if you like a website you should probably click on the "contact" link and tell the author you like their website

🐰 Oh I bet they get lots of email every day saying their website is cool, I'd just annoy them
🦝 Nope. I have a donations button and I'm not exaggerating when I say it gets hit a hundred times more often than my email address. People will literally transfer ten dollars from their bank account before saying "Hey cool website btw."

🐀 Wouldn't it be weird though
🦝 My learned friend, why do you think there's a "Contact" page on the website in the first place, it's so that you can say "Hey cool website btw."

🐴 This site hasn't been updated in ages, I bet they're not even interested anymore
🦝 Or maybe they stopped updating it because they had ten thousand people reading it every day but it felt empty and unfulfilling like shouting into a hole because only two of them ever emailed to say "Hey cool website btw."

🐹 But what do I even say
🦝 You say "Hey cool website btw."

@itamarst

Seems like advanced usage of an LLM would be something like asking it to write a custom visualization tool to help me understand my specific performance problem. Then throw it away when done.

Maybe profilers or debuggers could be smarter about visualizing data structures?

@munificent My brother and niece flew out last summer and we had a great time in Monterey.

Did you take the train in both directions? I wonder if we should try taking it to Seattle someday.

2025-05-20

@munificent Which Monterey?

2025-05-16

@bruces Looks like it’s fixed. Any idea what it was?

The new image generation in is the best I've seen for musical instruments (it can draw an accordion that looks right) but it still gets basic things wrong.

A piano keyboard with the wrong note indicated as middle C.

@markzero It’s mentioned in passing.. There are probably better sources.

@BigJackBrass @AccordionBruce Where would you get a replacement? I see reed plates for sale for harmonicas but not melodicas.

2025-03-22

@AccordionBruce @BigJackBrass

It's too bad the reeds aren't replaceable like Harmonicas.

2025-03-22

@AccordionBruce @BigJackBrass I've had good luck with Yamahas. But the reeds do corrode after a few years due to moisture. Fortunately they're not that expensive.

Tried tuning them but results were inconsistent.

@lcamtuf

Never mind coding and video. If some AI company figures out how to make a "do what I mean" UI for technical illustrations, that would be a real advance.

@UP8 No actionable feedback comes to mind, but I do get some good links from you. Thanks for sharing them!

@seav Nice! But what is the wavy horizontal line that’s not the equator?

2024-11-15

@munificent It seems like you need a way to reformat test output using an older, pinned version of dartfmt?

Then updating the pinned version would be a separate change.

@jefftk Maybe the kids wouldn’t object after they grew up more? Writing stories like that in private with the idea of maybe publishing them many years later might make sense?

Another possibility would be to give a vague disclaimer: “this seemed to work at the time, but there were problems later.”

@andrewrk In many California races, the root cause seems to be that most of the time, nobody who knows what they're doing runs against an established incumbent. Jungle primaries didn't fix that. Not sure ranked choice will either, if nobody good runs.

I guess it's like forking a popular project - more of an escape hatch.

@austern

As a programmer, all infinite loops / diverging functions look about the same to me.
