There seems to be a particular problem with v2.2.5.

Until our sole developer can get to grips with this, please note that the previous releases can be accessed via the project's Github [Releases](github.com/espanso/espanso/rel) page. v2.2.3 is the last stable release, although I have not had any problems with my current v2.2.4.

Any help with debugging and development would be much appreciated!

@dhry
Yes, AHK is good at that sort of stuff. On the rare occasion I need such a facility nowadays I have to use a script with `wmctrl` commands or some-such.

@smeech Setting the keyboard layout fixed it for me on another machine although i can’t remember if it was using Wayland or not.

I’ll have a look at the issue and see if I can add anything to it.

@smeech @kukuk Many differences, when looking at the details. And #espanso supports forms, same with #texpander?

2025-03-04

@petervennemann @kukuk
I'm not very familiar with , but I don't think it supports forms in the way does, except for its own popup which appears to be required for each expansion. I may be mistaken, however.
The similarly named commercial product, , does support forms. Is that what you're thinking of?

@popcar2
You may find "Cursor Hints" espanso.org/docs/matches/basic useful to take you to the first point of additional text entry within each snippet.

If you're using VSCode/VSCodium, however, then user-snippets are even more flexible than Espanso expansions.

@petervennemann @kukuk
The advantages of are its cross-platform ability and, like , but unlike and , it doesn't need a separate file for each trigger, so you can have thousands!

Having used AutoHotKey heavily for over a decade at work, I agree. I was very pleased to discover Espanso for my home Linux machine, and I no longer need AHK's Window and Form controls now.

@dhry
That's odd - they work fine here. Maybe the [injection mechanism](espanso.org/docs/matches/basic)? Glad you found a solution anyway.

I use:

- triggers: [:->,:>-]
replace: →
- triggers: [:<-,:-<]
replace: ←

among others.

I started using Espanso for quickly inserting templates that I use for my blog posts. What a WORLD of a difference it makes! Text expanders are so underrated, I wish somebody reminded me sooner that they exist.

Having used Mint for many years, I'm hoping! I spend a lot of time helping users with Espanso, and Wayland is the biggest headache!

There's an extensive discussion at github.com/espanso/espanso/iss and linked Issues.

Setting the `keyboard_layout:` values in `config/default.yml` has helped some people, but Espanso on Wayland remains problematic in various ways.

The Legacy (v0.7.3) code, documentation, and migration instructions have all been removed in a big clean-up of the source code and website.

If this causes any problems, do get in touch!

@vaidotak@mastodon.online I don't think there's been any development progress since the release on June 3ʳᵈ: github.com/dacog/textexpander_.
I guess it needs some people to try it and report any Issues, to encourage the author!

@vaidotak@mastodon.online
I've occasionally made use of , but find easier to configure and, like , it is better for large numbers of expansions.

There are probably other utilities, but a user on Discord (discord.com/channels/884163483) is working on mobile apps which can use Espanso's YAML files.

@dhry
Copy the lines between ```yml and ``` into an Espanso match file and try the two triggers, ":trig" and ":trit" in your text editor, to see what they do.
You can see in the link I posted, that we're using a YAML Block Scalar, with newlines kept ("|") and indentation of two ("2").

I must confess, I'm not quite sure how it works! I just did some experimenting with different indentation figures and spaces. I later copied my working code into onlineyamltools.com/prettify-y. which improved it!

@dhry
I use:

```yml
- trigger: :trig
replace: |2
- trigger: $|$
replace:
- trigger: :trit
replace: |2
- trigger: :test
replace: $|$
```

but your editor may need slightly different spacing depending on how it handles indentation on new lines.

See yaml-multiline.info/ for details of the method.

Sorry - I don't know how to make code-formatting in Mastodon.

I, too, was pleased to discover Espanso after many years of using AutoHotKey at work, and transitioning to Linux following the end of Windows XP.
It doesn't have the superb window controls of AHK, but I don't need them nowadays.
I now spend a lot of time supporting other Espanso users, and updating the documentation.
