Need a quick laugh to distract you from the horrors of the world? Just for a minute? I got you.

I tried to find out who made this. I failed. If someone knows, please let me know so I can update with a name and/or link.

(Update: the people who made this are also making AI/robotics weapons systems. So fuck the credit. Watch here, laugh, and don’t give them your web views.)

"A cyclist is a disaster for the country's economy: he does not buy cars and does not borrow money to buy. He does not pay for insurance policies. He does not buy fuel, does not pay for the necessary maintenance and repairs. He does not use paid parking. He does not cause serious accidents. He does not require multi-lane highways. He does not get fat.
Healthy people are neither needed nor useful for the economy. They don't buy medicine. They do not go to hospitals or doctors. Nothing is added to the country's GDP (gross domestic product).
On the contrary, every new McDonald's restaurant creates at least 30 jobs: 10 cardiologists, 10 dentists, 10 dietary experts and nutritionists, and obviously, people who work at the restaurant itself."
Choose carefully: cyclist or McDonald's? It is worth considering.
P.S. Walking is even worse. Pedestrians don't even buy bicycles.
P.P.S. If you have read this far and still don't get it, this post is SATIRE. Reread it with this in mind.

Seen on Paisley Road in #Guelph, Ontario.

A bike lane ends abruptly and squeezes people onto a blind hill with no shoulder. Two schools and a church are within a couple hundred metres.

There is a concrete wall next to a road without a shoulder. Spray painted in yellow block letters, it says "CYCLIST KILL-ZONE" .

@growfediverse coincidentally, the only time I've been to Tuscany did involve working on technical documentation.

@ageusantiago Pure speculation but maybe the Township of Esquimalt has a bylaw allowing the crossings without signs but the Esquimalt First Nation does not, and the crossing at Thomas Road is different because it's not marked leaving the one at Seenupin Road unique in being marked but without a bylaw allowing for cyclists to cross.

@growfediverse as long as we don't end up with technical docs buried under essays explaining the personal meaningfulness of this API with numerous anecdotes.

Silly #FOSS musings ... Sometimes I think people who write documentation would benefit from reading cook books and/or watching cooking shows. It can hone the skills of explaining steps in a helpful order, and explaining things that you take for granted.

As a lay person I frequently run across documentation that "skips" steps (because the writer has so much experience that in their mind it's not even a step anymore, it's unconscious), or that puts an important caveat too deep in such that the inexperienced person is caught off guard or can't undo the mistake.

Anyone who has experienced wildfire smoke knows how it can leave you with a scratchy throat, stinging eyes and impact your lungs.

However, smoke can also affect your brain, explain two experts.

@bookstodon Found it "Mother of Demons" by Eric Flint. I was pretty sure it was one of Drake, Flint, or Ringo. I scanned their bibliographies on Wikipedia and the titled jumped out when I saw it.

@bookstodon I'm trying to remember a book I read once. I'm pretty sure it was published by Baen. The premise was that humans from Earth are stranded on a planet where all life is mutually toxic with terrestrial life and there are two species of intelligent aliens which both resemble giant land squid one of which has roughly iron age/medieval technology and the other has little material technology, but can make food safe for the humans.

@ai6yr For the most part, better than nothing but not by all that much. depending on the details in might make it more difficult for people to move out of the bike lane to go around obstructions while also doing nothing to prevent drivers from parking in the

Maybe it would make particular sense for going around the insides of corners. If so I would want to see the rumble strip outset from the painted bike lane.

On June 28, 2023 I submitted a Request for Information to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure of British Columbia for documents related to the Island Railway on Vancouver Island. It took two years to receive the response.

@DavidM_yeg @Paulatics All I'm trying to say is that across society on average, it seems like the threshold for what people see as being a personal attack is getting lower and if that subjective observation is correct it's worth being aware of it, mostly in ourselves but a secondarily in how to communicate effectively. I'm not calling for any particular blanket action because it's going to depend greatly on the situation.

Kevin Smithsmithkm
2025-06-16

@DavidM_yeg @Paulatics The nuance is that their situation and goals are particular to them, and how they might want to incorporate factors including my subjective observation about an increasing tendency for people to interpret positions they disagree with as personal attacks into how they interpret communication they are inclined to disagree with or present positions the recipient might disagree with is particular to that complex situation.
