It seems obvious that we should prioritize addressing misinformation that is more harmful. But what makes something more likely to be harmful? Can we can reason about it before the harm has occurred?

📣 In an upcoming #CSCW2024 paper, we present a taxonomy of *Misinformation as a Harm* ➡️

First page of paper. Title: "Misinformation as a Harm: Structured Approaches for Fact-Checking Prioritization"

New paper from our lab on reporting systems! arxiv.org/abs/2306.10478 Have you ever tried to report something on social media? What do you think gets shared and who do you think sees the report? We seek to understand what ppl *think actually happens* when they report something. 1/n

When groups of people make collective judgments, it's not surprising to get uncertainty around the final answer.
Maybe the question is hard? Or perhaps people disagree?

But how do we approach this uncertainty to reach consensus?

Some new work from our lab relevant to those thinking about AI harms in the here and now! If you're worried about manipulated or synthetic image/video media spreading misinformation on social media, one approach that may get us out of the losing battle of detection is provenance. Imagine if you could see the edit history of images and videos on social media to make a better judgement about their credibility 🧐. We gave users this ability in our #CSCW2023 paper and measured changes in trust and accuracy perceptions:

We suggest several design ideas for tackling these new collaboration challenges! You can check out the paper for that & many more nuggets, like around design system management, handoffs with ML engs, common collaborators, use of different tools, etc! arxiv.org/abs/2302.11845

Paper aside, it was super fun and rewarding to actually 🎬produce 🎬 a video for our paper! It certainly took a lot of time and planning, but we hope we've provided a more engaging and accessible way to learn about our work! Again, here's the link: youtube.com/watch?v=s7i8XZUy_z.

Amy, Tony and I all plan to be at CHI in person. We hope to meet/catch up with you in Hamburg! 🇩🇪 8/8

The harms of engagement optimization and algorithmic amplification are at a boiling point. A @knightcolumbia symposium (Apr 28/29, NYC & online) has a unique set of 17 new papers dissecting the issue and proposing responses. The authors span CS, law, philosophy, psychology, and more. Many have worked on these issues at social media companies. This might be the first time a group like this has come together. Hope to see you there. UX practitioners face tricky challenges when designing ML-enabled interfaces. But can those challenges be mitigated if they could ✨interactively tinker✨ with simple models during the design process? Our #iui2023 paper says yes!
