10 mile (16km) walk along the river while I got my car serviced. Temperature started at 95, but climbed to 103 (from 35 to 39 C). To me, it doesn't count as hot until it hits 40C, but this particular walk had very little shade, so I was feeling, ummm, warm? Yup, definitely warm 😛.

Managed to get lost on the side trails, which, for me, is kind of like an achievement badge. It's no fun at all if you stick to the familiar trails!

As I reflect on the events portrayed in this film, two things strike me. First, these events unfolded decades ago—I was barely an adult when they occurred. Yet disturbingly, nostalgia for the brutal tactics of Brazil’s military regime (which ruled from the mid-sixties to the mid-eighties) persists today. Brazil’s most recent former president, Jair Bolsonaro—dubbed the “Trump of the Tropics”—has repeatedly and openly praised this dark chapter of authoritarian rule. (3/4)

Every other seemingly normal aspect of family life is thereafter imbued with tension and apprehension until the moment when things fall apart.

Apropos of several things floating across my TL, I just want to say as somebody who teaches college:

Yes, absolutely, politically conservative students on campus end up feeling uncomfortable in their views, constantly challenged. 100%.

So do leftists.

So do centrists.

So do students who attempt to be apolitical.

Nobody gets to hang out on campus feeling comfortable and cushy in their worldview. That is…you know…kind of the point of the place.

Took my wife out on another neighborhood hike. Drove a couple miles to the river, then took her on a 2.75 mile out-and-back along river trails. I let her pick the turnaround point. If it was me, I wouldn't be able to stop!

The lake (which is really just a wide part of the river) was crazy busy. Likewise the paved bike trails. That's why I stick with the unofficial dirt trails. Nicer views, more relaxed, more shade.

Poppies! Probably the only flower whose name I know. Two yellow poppies in the foreground with a bunch of out-of-focus orange poppies in the background.

Looking out at the lake from the hiking trail. Wow is it crowded! We're almost at the point where a frog could hop across the lake from one paddle board to the next without ever touching the water.
