Social media innovation enthusiast.
Created and solely ran quicktopic.com, a free "instant topic" discussion board site, which existed for over 20 years, and was the longest-continuously-running web-based social media platform before I closed it in 2021.

Founded a local online course-taking collective. Would love to foster replication.

Music collaborator. Upright bass player currently.

Family man, though kids are launched.

Intellectual omnivore.

Sometime meditator.

Rower, trail runner.

@judell @gvwilson

If you're referring to QuickTopic in general, though, I'm not sure anything has come along to replace its niche of having a super low barrier to participation, yet just private enough as needed. When I shut it down, many users lamented that there was nothing else like it that they could find. Anyone think I should resurrect it using new technology?

@judell @gvwilson
Hi @judell ! You'll probably recall that you were an extension to quicktopic.com called Quick Doc Review, which took your uploaded HTML document, and for every paragraph added a link for making QuickTopic comments. I remember building that in direct response to a suggestion you made! And before Google docs came along, it was one of the best solutions for easily sharing a document to gather comments. Now, of course Google docs is the go-to way to do this.

@tutormentor1 @hrheingold
It's interesting to think about how the peer learning model adapts to mentors/mentees environments. There's a nice economy of scale in having the learned material online, and the format of regular in-person sessions is adaptable.
I'm excited that through peeragogy.org , I've connected with a teacher in Brazil who is now trying the model with other teachers.

@hrheingold Nice.
I've been big fan of Bob Axelrod's Evolution of Cooperation (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ev) for a long time.

Our online course collective just finished another Coursera course, this one about the power grid in the US (and with examples from Europe). It was surprisingly interesting! I realized (1) that my town already has a baseline requirement for renewable energy and (2) it was easy to opt in for 100% renewable, which I did.

We also agreed to further enhance the site with links that we've traded about each course over the last three years.

New connections being made too!

@JamesGleick Ha, yes, and Magritte might say the same of the other bicycle-containing images!

@kell_topaz
Nice! Suggest a #halfbakery.com honorific?

@richieholland

Ha, but not if it becomes too cluttered with "boost this toot" toots.

Fascinating! Is there a consideration of fractal dimension?

In 1981 I was a VISTA volunteer working for the Michigan Alliance of Cooperatives.

Pre-public-internet, we traveled the state building an "information and referral network" for all kinds of co-ops.

I'd love to learn more about what's lacking in making this happen -- and help make it happen!

@humanities Nice! And there's a group known equally for their stories and illustrations, like Ludwig Bemelmans, James Thurber, Shel Silverstein.

I don't think this is getting the coverage it needs. Scottish government to require passivhaus standard for all new build homes. This is big. Really big. Growing out of lessons from the 70's oil crisis. Passivhaus buildings use very little energy to heat, or to cool. We've known how to do this for decades. It's gross negligence from all western governments that the same is not true of all new builds in the developed world.

@BrailleScreen please let me know if there's anything I can do to improve my onlinecoursecollectve.org site for screen readers. Its on my to do list to add alt text for the photos. They're just stock photos of people discussing.

Its a pretty vanilla WordPress site.

@tracyplaces I normally use a daily checklist and and open ended journaling. I'll try yours!

@hrheingold I had a great talk with Charlotte at peeragogy.org after your suggestion a couple of weeks ago. I'm on their mailing list, and the handbook is on my to-read list. Thanks!
