My great grandfather invented boxer-brief underpants. Yes, really.

@ceresbzns I dunno if there's a generic guide; I had my old adapter from the days of Google Voice. I was able to reset it, turn off it's settings for trying to provision the no-longer extant service, and configure it to work with a regular SIP provider (callcentric).
Grandstream makes VoIP adapters which get good reviews and will work, too

I set up an old desk phone with a VoIP adapter and now Stripeydottir (8) is calling everybody she knows XD

@navi sorry. I kinda took all this as an invitation to info-dump and you may already know all this stuff. I'm sorry to have made the assumption that you needed me to weigh in - I just get all happy when anybody finds double-edged shaving.

@navi post-shave skin care is important also. Styptic pencils and alum blocks are very useful.

@navi when you are first starting out, you will want to err on the side of not shaving closely enough and having to make a second or third pass.
Long, smooth strokes to begin with ('scrubbing' is it's own technique).
Shaving with the direction of your hair will also help you not get so many nicks until you develop the skill.

@navi that looks like a decent enough razor; first two things I recommend is that you get different blades (I love and use Astra Superior Platinum) and spend a few minutes practicing finding the optimal angle for your skin:
Start holding the razor with the handle perpendicular to your skin, where the blade cannot touch your skin at all. Then gently and slowly tilt the handle until the blade *just* begins to catch hair.
With your other hand, keep your skin pulled tight, and use plenty of lather.
The lather is, IMHO, the best part. As a man, I don't get many opportunities to explore scents, so different shaving soaps are how I go about it.
There's a whole forum devoted to wet shaving including both safety razors and traditional straight razor shaving, where I used to be pretty active, but I haven't popped on there in a decade: badgerandblade.com

@navi I got deep into this about fifteen years ago, and it is now all very easy for me but I can try to point you to some good resources if we're talking about the same kind of safety razor

The Original Stripey Goodnessstripey@meow.social

@navi when you say "safety razor" do you mean the old fashioned kind which takes double-edged blades?

There's a lot of "there" there: different blades work better and worse; technique is really important...

Okay. I'm a teacher, so let me say this in a way everybody can understand.

If you ask me for $5 and I say no, but you take it out of my purse anyway, that's stealing.

If you ask me for $5 and I'm too drunk to either say yes or no, but you take $5 from my purse anyway, that's stealing.

If I give $5 to your friend, so you decide that gives you the right to take $5 out of my purse, that's stealing.

If I gave $5 to you yesterday, so you decide to take $5 out of my purse today, that's stealing.

If I'm flashing hundred dollar bills on the street, just really flaunting how much money I have, so you decide to take $5 out of my purse, that's stealing.

If I tell you I'll give you $5, but then, while reaching into my purse to get it, I change my mind and say actually no, but you decide to take the $5 anyway, that's stealing.

If you hold a gun to my head and force me to give you $5, even if I physically reach into my purse and hand you the $5 without another word, that's stealing.

If no one has ever given you $5, and you can see I have extra money in my purse, so you take $5, that's stealing.

If we're married, and you ask for $5 and I say no, but you decide to take $5 out of my purse anyway, that's stealing.

If you say "God gave me $5" and then take $5 out of my purse, that's stealing.

If you're my boss, and you tell me you'll fire me if I don't give you $5 right now, that's stealing.

If you want $5, and I reach in my purse and only give you $1, but you reach in while the purse is open and take $5 anyway, that's stealing.

If you pretend to be my friend in the hopes that being my friend will someday lead to me deciding to give you $5, you aren't actually my friend. And if you take the $5 you were expecting to get for pretending to be my friend, that's stealing.

The reason all men can easily understand this, and that there are no "grey areas" in stealing $5, is that men value $5 more than they value a woman's body.

With Mozilla announcing they're shutting down Pocket I thought I'd mention that for a while I've been working on a little bookmarking web-app called Readlynx. It will be open-source and self-hosted, but I hope to look into providing hosted instances in the future.

It's a single binary to download and run, which I'm hoping will make it super easy to get started. If this interests you, follow me or the #readlynx hash tag for updates. 1/2

I made a for the first time since 2019 and I’m donating it to the fundraiser that begins this Sunday.

Face jugs are a expression of the American South brought here by enslaved Africans (specifically Congolese, according to scholars).

The heads of the Ife Empire are part of the artistic legacy of Yoruba people of Nigeria.

With this piece, I draw on the wisdom and ingenuity of our ancestors to make an offering to the next generation of creators.

A terracotta sculpture of a human head, featuring highly naturalistic, detailed facial features and intricate hair styling. The piece has a smooth finish and is the reddish tan color of natural fired clay. It is the artwork of the Ife Empire (1000-1400 CE) depicting a person of high status. A ceramic jug made by Osa Atoe, sculpted to resemble a human face, featuring detailed facial features, expressive eyes, and decorative markings. The jug has a narrow neck and a handle, set against a neutral background. It has elements of a Southern face jug and the Ife terracotta heads combined. The color of the piece is a dark reddish brown, derived from wild clay terra sigillata. A ceramic vessel shaped like a human face, featuring exaggerated facial features, large eyes, and a wide mouth displaying teeth. The surface has a greenish-brown glaze, giving it an aged appearance. The jug is from Edgefield, South Carolina and was created by an unknown enslaved potter.

The City of is refusing to allow a librarian with Stage 4--i.e. terminal--cancer use sick days that other librarians in her union have *donated*. I am very glad our mayor stood up in Congress a few months ago to congressional bullies, but that doesn't give her administration a pass on and compassion. cc @bplpsa

Signal have rolled out an update to all users that stops Microsoft Recall from capturing Signal conversations.

I’ve tested this and it works. Brilliant work by the @signalapp team. 💪

They call on Microsoft to build better, as there was no standardised way as an app developer to do this. Because Signal is open source, now app developers have a template to protect their users from Windows.
