The Spoonless Kitchen

I am an indigenous PwD originally from Canada, interested in food, cooking, and universal design and accessibility, zero waste, and how to bring all those things together. Refuse, reduce, re-use, recycle. #nobot Sign up for epicure.social here: epicure.social/invite/xEzP3D8S

One other note until April 2023 my posts will likely be mostly about COVID/disinformation. Mute me until then if the plague isn't as present of a threat for you, as it still is for me and mine. Thanks.

@neonsnake The NHS ones should be fully-funded, yes. The other parts, e.g. the receiver that goes in the ear, also have to be custom-fitted (so it doesn't fall out), FYI. £500 is a very good price, if she can get something to match her residual hearing at that price. The less residual hearing = the pricier/more powerful the microphone needed. FWIW.

@neonsnake There is actually research out there that says seniors can stave off cognitive decline if they use hearing aids - assuming they had full hearing beforehand. D/deaf people are no more susceptible than anyone else to old age, dementia, etc. Same idea with glasses here, for your hearing mother, e.g. you want her to hear the traffic around her, yeah?

@quixoticgeek That's terrifying!

@neonsnake it's not the technology, it's adapting the technology to the residual hearing (if any) of the user; one-sound-fits-all does not work. Poor analogy but close: are all eyeglass prescriptions the same? "Just save your money and buy reading glasses from the pharmacy" is close to what you're saying here....

@WeirdWriter @JamesHeady

Internalised ableism is real and an absolute horrorshow, and I saw this 20+ years ago in the deaf/HoH/HI community.

I *was* this, 20 years ago, being raised auditory-verbal (oral). The isolation of the plague years truly did give me the outlook "IDGAF anymore" tho.

As a PwD (not deafness) I find the "invisible disability" idpol thing to be more internalised ableism. Half a century ago, we were all fighting NOT to be labelled as "disabled," ffs!

@GregDance @CommonMugwort @aehdeschaine Xitter, IMO, is a symptom of a larger decay, that began in mid-2020, on all of the antisocial websites. With their algorithms that parasitised the minds of those who spent more time online than they ever had in their lives, without understanding what the on/off, zeroes-and-ones, zero-sum-only algorithms were driving them to. I.e., real-world "protests" non-compliance to infection control measures, pandemic denial etc.

@CommonMugwort @aehdeschaine IMO we can't make the binary machines be human, nor can we insert real humanity into the ones and zeroes of the actual "Matrix" that in 4 short years caused 35M plague deaths.

I no longer believe it is possible to make human connections via the Internet, in a way that will (or even can), counteract the damage that's already been done. 1/2

@CommonMugwort @aehdeschaine This is exactly the reason the Internet needs to be turned off IMO. Instead of building AI in a human image, the algorithms have brainwashed humanity into a very cruel black-and-white thinking mindset. On/off, zero/one, no room for nuance or natural complexity. No room for natural human feeling, it's either dopamine-fuelled addictive high, or dopamine-withdrawal-induced rage, and nothing in between. The Internet has impoverished humanity from being human.

@CommonMugwort "The “Dark” Enlightenment is a disturbing oxymoron that proposes a mix of the ancien régime with the ideology of Silicon Valley."

Yikes! That's not terrifying at all, is it? (Note my sarcasm.)

Not a single computer in sight and none required. Long overdue to turn off the world-heating Internet.

I mean, the anti-science plague rats want to go back to PRE-medieval times; in medieval times, they built skyscrapers and pasteurized their milk, so let's go back that far, eh?

"It's essentially the end of a labour-intensive process which stands in stark contrast to modern industrial techniques. Collette's tools last not for decades, but for centuries or even longer."

Replies already being astroturfed by the Chinese trolls continuing to spread anti-vaccination disinformation, with little to no pushback. Quelle surprise. /s 😞

#China: "We can't brainwash everyone via the Internet anymore, so we'll just turn off our victims' Internet instead."

cbc.ca/lite/story/1.7394525

China is wrong, and it's a classic abuser's tactic ("If I can't have you, no one can.") but this is actually a positive step forward for the world. Keep cutting those cables, China! The sooner the Internet goes down, the sooner the foreign state trolls end up cutting off their own noses to spite their faces.

They've already killed 35M people, tho...

Meanwhile, over on the #HarmReduction addictive #antisocial website dujour, #Bluesky, the dopamine fiends are yowling "#Auspol is wrong! They shouldn't ban antisocial websites for minors! It's a universal digital ID enforcement slippery slope!! Screaming outrage!"

IMO #Australia didn't go far enough, and neither did the rest of the #Commonwealth; ALL antisocial websites need to be #geoblocked outside of the #USA and #China. Now. NOW.

The #TikTok "ban" was a farce.

TURN. THE. INTERNET. OFF.

Speaking of #China's state troĺls....

"#Chinese state media is reportedly troubled by the latest exodus of [Xitter] users flocking to #bluesky. State outlets, which put considerable resources into amassing millions of followers on Elon Musk’s social media platform — including by buying ads, deploying bots, and hiring influencers — have recently seen their growth plateau."

Yeah, like me, trying to fight the tsunami of hundreds of thousands of Russian/Chinese/Iranian state trolls on the Internet, who killed 35M people from 2020 through 2023!

Disinformation campaigns on antisocial websites map exactly onto the SIR (susceptible-infected-recovered) model of epidemiology. (Water, also, is very wet.)
