In Philly for the Pysch! Convention #PsychOdelphia, so of course we have to get #GlutenFree donuts from OkieDokie Donuts in So. Philly. https://www.okiedokiedonuts.com
@MrFarland this is what content warnings are for! Because now all of us #celiacs that see this will now have to go to our city's equivalent. In my case, and #denver, that's #MooreBreadBakery https://www.moorebreadbakery.com/
/s btw. No need for CWs. But I do want donuts.
I hate that charity exists. Not because I'm upset that people are kind and willing to give, but that it has to happen, because many people don't have enough to survive. With all the wealth in the world this is ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous is that the working class is still more generous than the rich.
Charity is rarely necessary in an equitable world.
Got my library card and the Libby app fired up. Subscribed to some science and audio magazines. This is absolutely amazing, I had no idea we had access to all this material through an app linked to our local library. Should have done this years ago.
I don't know if you guys have heard of this phenomenon, but I cannot recommend it enough. 'Sugar'. I'm eating something called 'Rocky Road' and it has *immediately* made me feel better.
Is there a word for when sci-fi collides with real life? Because I'm reading the last book of the MaddAdam trilogy by Margaret Atwood when I became aware of (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/28/magazine/prospera-honduras-crypto.html) Prospera Honduras (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pr%C3%B3spera). A corporate city state where people go for non FDA approved treatments?!
Pigoons folks. This is how you end up with pigoons.
@foon the bread looks awesome! But for safety precautions I have to point out that rye has gluten in it. Rye, wheat and barley are the three grains that do and those with celiac can't have them.
The irony is not lost on me that the Internet Archive went out of its way to acquire the physical versions of millions of books and loan them out carefully and in a limited way, and is facing a near-extinction-level event over it, while for-profit and VC-backed companies are just stealing peopleโs content and making up excuses to validate the bad behavior.
@aemaeth I recently installed FreshRSS (https://github.com/FreshRSS/FreshRSS) in Docker for my Feedly alternative. It's got a decent enough web interface for the desktop but on my phone I'm using https://github.com/Ashinch/ReadYou which connects to my FreshRSS instance.
Reason number 5 billion why libraries are the best โค๏ธ๐
A librarian helped me find the book my son requested today. She knew the plot & the characters & even pointed me to the newest story from the series in case he might enjoy that too. Then she recommended other #books he might like.
When I thanked her, she simply shook her head explaining, โItโs my job. And I really love my job!โ
I share this anecdote simply bc librarians are the best people ๐โจ

"I'm upset about abortions"
"Let's fund sex ed, contraceptives and health care for pregnant women, it will cause the number of abortions to decline dramatically."
"NO. Send the women & doctors to jail."
"I'm upset people jump the turnstyle"
"Let's properly fund the subway and make it free and faster while reducing overhead."
"NO. I want those bad teens ARRESTED."
"This dreary area under the bridge is DISGUSTING."
"Let's clean it up & install a public restroom."
"NO. Arrest people for pooping"
So I went to the grocer today to get supplies to make some apple pies, and when I got in line to check out, the cashier told me in an exasperated tone "I don't know how long this'll take. These people don't have enough to pay for their stuff and they don't speak a word of English".
I asked how much. $1.13. Their SNAP card was just over a dollar short.
When I used to work as a cashier, I was regularly a few bucks short at the end of the day for this exact reason.
I told them to just go have a good day and that I'd pay for their stuff. It was only $16 in total.
The indifference in society today makes me so sad. They needed food more than Safeway needed a dew more dollars of profit.
When I went to pay, the kiosk offered to have me round up or donate $5 to feed the hungry.
I think direct action made a bigger difference today.
Edit: to make the moral more explicit. I posted this so the next cashier who finds themselves in that situation might look the other way, or the next person in line might make it their problem *instead of* looking the other way.
