New-ish Wuppertaler and a research associate the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. I teach typography and design stuff but spend most of my time looking into late-19th and early-20th-century German typefounding.

@Okay Monotype hasn’t bought Bauer Types yet, has it?!

Today, on Fontstand News, Lisa Huang gives us some of the backstory and her motivation for creating @wordsoftype. You should check out her essay and visit her project’s site – if you don’t already look things up there multiple times a week:

It was the first step towards creating the Words of Type database.Screenshot of a database the author calls her “monster table.”Yann Bastard designed this illustration, which accompanies the “layout” definition. If you haven’t visited the Words of Type website before, this is what it looks like!

@essaime @fhardwig @typographica I have a Linotype catalog where the typeface is included. The 1980s Linotype catalogs don’t show the typefaces at notable sizes, though.

Optima Classified, a typeface in two weights, shown here in a close-up from a page in Linotype’s 1987 catalog.

@peirantan G&D partially funds the Museum für Druckkunst Leipzig! I can’t recall, but there might be a small bit of information on that large firm in the permanent exhibition.

@mntrs @db Before this nonsense, books could be imported into Germany for free if their cost plus shipping was less than a specific value (about €100?). As if my imports of small run design books and used type specimens hurt the EU book market!

2025-06-12

@db A copy that was sent to me a year or so ago was never delivered. I‘m sad to say that, since the new EU tariffs went into effect on the summer of 2021, less than half (!!!) of packages sent to me from the UK ever arrive, and when they do, I have to pay a tax and a delivery carrier fee, even for things I did not purchase.

We’re are launching an independent industry-wide survey for font users. We want to hear about your experiences: What works? What’s confusing or frustrating? What would you change? Your answers will help us decide how licensing works within the Fontstand Cooperative.

@eWalthert @FontID This is just because I haven’t edited any settings for my iPhone camera app 😭 The curves are actually smooth and the book was printed via offset printing. Now I just have to figure out how to take more accurate photos …

@kai @morningtype Who would give fonts their ISBNs and how should those people be paid and their records maintained? In some countries, tax-funded national libraries take care of these for books. What font-makers revive tax money to maintain themselves?

2025-06-10

@morningtype @kai Many fonts already have the same name, right? But I don’t know about turning this into a “right.” Trademarks have been filed for by font-makers for so long that I can’t see any going back to the generic, descriptive names of old.

Well, at least its not just me.... 🥲

The image features a meme with a dark blue background. At the top, in white text, it reads, "Them: What does it feel like to have ADHD?" Below this, the word "Me:" is written in white text. The main content of the meme is a tweet from a user named Natalie, with the handle [@]jbfan911. The tweet, also in white text, reads, "Every day I wait for an email that says 'you're in BIG trouble and everyone is mad at you.'" The tweet includes a circular profile picture of a woman with blonde hair, wearing a blue top. The overall layout is simple, with the text and profile picture clearly visible against the dark background

@DunwichType @onpaperwings +1! Papyrus is a great typeface.

@sPECtre I agree with @fhardwig: It must be lettering!

@triple @kupfers And in InDesign (which not everybody uses), when you set app’s interface to the German language, you can select one of variously worse levels of aesthetic hyphenation for German in the H&J settings. Not all permitted hyphenation possibilities are desirable or aesthetically pleasing.

2025-06-06

@triple @kupfers If search for a word on the Duden website, the page for that word also shows where it’s hyphenation is permitted.
