Wow hi yes hello I haven’t logged in here in awhile. I am still holding out on the bird app and also started a professorial insta account @prof.cable.

Not sure I have it in me to juggle all these apps, but I’ll try! Glad to connect with folks however we can in these dreadful days of late stage capitalism. ā™„ļø

The birdsite flagged this post for 'sensitive' information. Consider it an incentive to buy this book. (It's illustrated!!)

Bright red book jacket featuring resolute-looking illustrated Black women overlooking a city aflame. Title: WAKE:The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts. Author: Dr. Rebecca Hall. Illustrated by: Hugo Martinez

Sure, there’s an orientalist discourse about Qatar (just as there is about all of West and South Asia). But there’s also a postcolonial, left, and queerfeminist lens at work in the critiques of ultra-capitalism, migrant labor exploitation and deaths, petro-states, and the absence/limited nature of queer, trans, and women’s freedoms. Western orientalism and uncritical ā€œGlobal Southā€ solidarity (which scarcely even applies here: this is a Global North state in economic terms) are emphatically *not* the only possible political positions. #poco #petrostates #migrantrights #lgbtqrights #postcolonialism #critiquebeforesolidarity #orientalism

What would be a good peer reviewed journal/magazine for an academic article accompanied by a photo essay?

If you’re new to Mastodon, you may at some point find that you’re being pressured to put your posts behind a content warning (CW). Although CWs make sense for things like images of violence or nudity, some people are bullying others to put CWs on discussions of politics, racism, etc.
Please know that you should not feel pressured to obey these individuals. They do not speak for all. If someone does not want to be exposed to these topics, Mastodon gives them all the tools they need to avoid them, such as keyword filters and the ability to block or mute people who are posting things they don’t like.

#musktotusk ettiquette thoughts. I'd been thinking about this for a while, but @MiraAssafK 's latest post about self-censoring in response to a Tedious Reply which positions both venting about and agitating against injustice as uncivil, warning-worthy, and/or a specific cultural produt of the bird site kind of crystalised it.

There's the macro culture problem pertaining to the White People (mostly white, all people) doing the norm-enforcing.

It's looking to me like there's also a problem of speed and critical mass. And thence, *my* engagement patterns, honed on twitter & tumblr, are not helping.

1. Speed: things take a long time to federate between servers. I think there's even a bit of a lag between me posting on @hcommons and my own post showing up in my feed; the lag is much slower for @highly_reckons showing up here.

Thread coming up.

@claudia_sicon to be fair, I’ve only been here a short while. I do see mastodon as having some great potential, but right now everything feels stressful and weird. I’m straddled across Twitter, insta and the don and I feel like I’m grasping at straws. One thing I def like about this app is that my posts get a lot more engagement than on Twitter. I just started a professional Instagram account and I’m already feeling like that’s going to be too much work for just some scraps of engagement. For now@ I’m gonna keep throwing stuff out to see what sticks. ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

mastodon.art has defederated from journa.host . There are a few problematic reasons, like scouring people's content to use and quote without permission, but most notably, they've used a tool developed by kiwifarms (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_Far) to scan instance blocklists . The fedi culture generally is very anti-tabloid-journalism and obviously there are concerns about privacy, but using a tool developed by known harassers for the sole purpose of harassing is over the line.

@amisamileanded I hope things shift, but for now, I feel the framework of civility does not invite people to bring their activism to this space.

2022-11-20

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: mastodon has a whiteness problem.

2022-11-20

@MiraAssafK I’m sorry that happened. FWIW: I have felt similarly. Been trying to find and connect with more BIPOC scholars, artists, and activists on here, but it’s been…slow.

2022-11-20

@devjpow if we’re talking personal email accounts: early on (like late 90s) it was new and exciting a vehicle for meaningful communication, like letter writing or quick notes from friends. Now it’s just a hellscape of corporate advertising, political campaigning, and bills. :dumpster_fire:
