Tomorrow I’m walking off the job with hundreds of my Washington Post colleagues because the company is breaking the law and bargaining in bad faith. Respect our picket line during our 24-hour strike by avoiding Washington Post journalism on Dec. 7, and send a letter to our bosses here: bit.ly/postguildsupport

So I think this message is from Pooka, since that's the username at the top of the stack here. I went back through this chain as far as I could get and I don't see any questions from Pooka. If there was something that I missed it's far more likely that I failed to use the tech properly than that I simply ignored your question.

Born in 1848, Caroline Still Anderson completed high school at 15. When she enrolled at Oberlin College, she was the only Black student in her class.

Anderson went on to become a physician, driven to improve the social & political conditions of Black people. She also served as a prominent a social reformer in Philadelphian society.

@lednabwm@mstdn.party @athyHans@c.im @jhavok@mastodon.social @forthy42@mastodon.net2o.de @antonioserrata@masto.ai @_9CL7T9k8cjnD_@mastodon.social @Willow@stranger.social please do not presume to know what I have been taught. I was taught to read. Christians do anything, from planting a garden to engaging in genocide, your lot will have it be entirely because they are Christian. My point was very much simpler than the fantasy castle you have constructed. What do you say when atheists do the same things?

@lednabwm@mstdn.party @jhavok@mastodon.social @forthy42@mastodon.net2o.de @antonioserrata@masto.ai @athyHans@c.im @_9CL7T9k8cjnD_@mastodon.social @Willow@stranger.social like I said, this time the Christians are the savages and some other people get to play the voice of sanity and reason. It's a really wild script. Most modern anti religious people would see colonialism and all it did as at least mistaken. Then claim that what needs to happen is more or less the same thing because reasons.

@lednabwm@mstdn.party @forthy42@mastodon.net2o.de @athyHans@c.im @jhavok@mastodon.social @antonioserrata@masto.ai @_9CL7T9k8cjnD_@mastodon.social @Willow@stranger.social I am no apologist for anything. There have been atrocities committed by people who were in some way attached to many and various religions. There have been atrocities committed by people who did not align themselves with any religion. The common factor here, in my opinion, is that some people like to play dictator. If religion is a path to power for them, if that's what works, they will use it. But in other historical contexts other things work. Ethnicity, connection to a place, there are lots of ways to divide people up and get them to fight each other. That is a big part of what makes these schemes work. If one causes group A to fear and despise group B then one can propose a solution and gain power. It's a recurring pattern. Only this time the PR seems focused on presenting the Christians as the idol worshipping savages and some other group as the voice of sanity and reason. Hope it turns out better than last time, but I have my doubts.

I enjoy the nuts and bolts aspect of it and wish I were better at translating Greek. This is one aspect of this conversation. Some people are very much opposed to the idea of any so called holy book. The fact that scholars in this field can generally agree that most of this stuff is mostly the same gives a good starting point for this type of scholarly endeavor.

Lets make it happen.

let finish the job.

@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world I get it. I think that the general expectation was revised downward considerably after Trump

68 years ago today Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery Alabama bus then she was arrested and that sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

RIP Rosa.

@claralistensprechen3rd@friendica.myportal.social people who torture other people? What? On the face of it I suppose it's a valid statement, but help me see why it is connected to what we were talking about.

@athyHans@c.im @jhavok@mastodon.social @antonioserrata@masto.ai @_9CL7T9k8cjnD_@mastodon.social @lednabwm@mstdn.party @Willow@stranger.social I agree with you that not all (fill in the blank) are (unpleasant condition or tendency). I used the example I did because it was my assertion that the person I was exchanging ideas with was painting with too broad a brush. Not all Christians are whatever diabolical thing was being asserted. Had my interlocutor not been an atheist I would have used some different example. I suspect that you already know that, but I don't have a fancy word to describe that condition. I would agree that two wrongs don't make a right, that was never my contention. It is counterproductive to label people based on the broadest possible interpretation of what some person somewhere did at some time. That was my point. The Soviet regime in general was opposed to organized religion, that is no great stretch. I do not suspect atheists of being communist, or socialist, simply because they are atheist, and frankly I wouldn't be upset if they were.
People want to say that I am awful because I am a whatever, don't get overly exercised if I pick up some of your rocks and throw them back. Or just quit with the labels and be people.

@_9CL7T9k8cjnD_@mastodon.social @jhavok@mastodon.social @antonioserrata@masto.ai @athyHans@c.im @lednabwm@mstdn.party @Willow@stranger.social sounds interesting. It is also worth noting that we are both using a platform where advertising is not a feature.

@lednabwm@mstdn.party @jhavok@mastodon.social @antonioserrata@masto.ai @athyHans@c.im @_9CL7T9k8cjnD_@mastodon.social @Willow@stranger.social if you believe that then let's hear how you think advertising works. Did the people who pay for the ads already know that we were going to buy this soft drink, or that breakfast cereal, but only if they play their part by blowing millions on advertising?

@lednabwm@mstdn.party @jhavok@mastodon.social @antonioserrata@masto.ai @athyHans@c.im @_9CL7T9k8cjnD_@mastodon.social @Willow@stranger.social Zappa is cool. Don't lump me in with whoever it is that you have such a grievous and venomous hatred for and I'm sure we will get along just fine. From my perspective it feels like being accused of being in the KKK simply because I am Caucasian.

@_9CL7T9k8cjnD_@mastodon.social @jhavok@mastodon.social @antonioserrata@masto.ai @athyHans@c.im @lednabwm@mstdn.party @Willow@stranger.social that's an interesting take. I would suggest that if that is so then one more assertion may also be made. I can best explain this by analogy. One does some renovation in one's home. New walls are installed. Oh, how shall we cover the new walls? Paint, paneling, tile, etc, etc. Choosing to leave the wall bare is also a choice and makes a statement. I most strenuously object to your theory, but that is about as much of my time as I will waste on it.
