Does anyone know of the best resources for checking whether words were #homophones in 1800s American #English? For example, Straight/Strait?

I’m a scholar of medieval (mainly ~200~1000 CE) Chinese literature and religion at UC Santa Barbara, and have side interests in digital humanities, translation, and world literature. I’ve written a lot about Buddhist poetry in the Tang Dynasty. I also teach Classical Chinese and a bunch of other things here.

My first book will be coming out with Cornell University Press next year. It's titled "Poet-Monks: The Invention of Buddhist Poetry in Late Medieval China." There's finally a webpage for it, so it feels "real" enough to announce.

#PoetMonks combines #CloseReading, #DigitalHumanities, and #Manuscript studies to re-examine the role of #Buddhism in #Medieval #Chinese #poetry and rethink #literaryhistory.
Cover art (and much more!) to come soon.
@ijustmightbe excellent Blue :Trawler photos, and even more excellent ALT descriptions on them!
I have always preferred the rich history, artistry, and meaning of traditional characters. Plus, love in simplified Chinese is heartless. https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/blogs/et-commentary/love-in-simplified-chinese-is-without-a-heart/

@thezerobit I thought Spanish did? I know French does. I imagine Chinese does.

@thezerobit Out of interest, which languages have thrived without standardization? How do you teach a language without standardization? (this is genuine curiosity, not trolling)
Today I learned that there is a strong argument to be made for Christ actually speaking Greek, not just Aramaic.

@thezerobit Except, language requires some standardization in order to do its job. It needs dictionaries in order to stay common and accessible. When you disband standards you promote divergence and issues. I am no believer in a biblical single language for unity, but languages must have an identity. "I've taken classes in Chinese" should be an assertion that allows some expectations about communication ability
