The #DataSittersClub is back with an all-new book on topic modeling! If the LDA buffet explainer didn't do it for you, give this one a try: thanks to @xandaschofield and her student Sathvika Anand, I now feel like I actually understand how it works. datasittersclub.github.io/site #DigitalHumanities

@Halperta thanks, after three rejections for my own grants it was awesome to be able to help with a departmental one, especially with a cool focus. Huge props to co-PI George Montanez and former PI Lucas Bang, both pre-tenure colleagues who ran our last REU site, for helping make this happen.

Becoming very clear that Mary Shelley’s needy emo model of AI alignment—“oops, we shouldn’t have let it read Paradise Lost”—is going to turn out 1000% more accurate than Asimov’s Three Laws.

Nowadays everybody got a bot
And they want something to say
But nothing comes out when they dump their bits
Just a bunch of gibberish
And Microsoft appears to have forgot about Tay

Today was almost all meetings but I at least got to end it by shopping for craft supplies for class tomorrow...y'know, like you do for upper level college CS courses

Advised on this. Demonstrates effect of women's bodies being objectified, laundered through "AI", back into what we see(/don't see) online.
The co-author Gianluca wrote on Tiwtter, "It's because of [Meg] [that] on the Guardian there's a gif of me bare-chested wearing a bra🙂"
Great praise! 😍

It's not surprising that this so-called "AI" product also involves exploited labor (exposing poorly paid people to traumatic content at high velocity), but it is still another thing to have it documented like this. Thank you @perrigo for this reporting.

Several deadlines and important tasks in the next few weeks and here I am, up at midnight, agonizing over the NYT's failure to properly log that I completed the Jan 2 crossword on time, thus breaking an over 800 day streak.

What fool called it Glorot Initialization of Weights and not Weighting for Glorot

2022-12-14

@quinnanya Thanks! I'm interested in both, but right now sort of the "high level" side for an earlier lecture in an upcoming class...though I'm finding the more I watch that talks about it, the less convinced I am that a high-level leadership lecture is necessarily a good use of time.

2022-12-14

Anyone have talks on leadership they've seen online that they found valuable? In particular, that go beyond platitudes and survivor bias and get into more concrete challenges of leadership?

The joy of waking up at 12 AM PDT to join the #WiNLP22 workshop from the other side of the world and to immediately hear amazing conversation about Dr. Houda Boamor's work...it may be the late night shift here, but I still feel so lucky to be a part of this workshop! #EMNLP2022

Widening NLP #WiNLP22 is happening this year at #EMNLP2022 in ~13 hours! We're really excited to showcase research and researchers from around the world doing work to broaden our horizons in NLP.
