I run a bit, garden a bit, tinker a bit. Mediocre blog writing.

I bought a second-hand printer a year ago so I could scan things, but it didn't have ink, so I couldn't print. After finding some cheap generic printer cartridges, for the first time since the 90s I think, I have a printer that prints. I don't have paper however...

@toxision I really like your top list-placement. Changing mine now!

@fyr @shellsharks @xandra @box464 @readbeanicecream You lot are filling my feeds with absolute banging content. You are truly making the web thrive. Thank you thank you thank you. I really should go outside more though.

@dammn I went for #tut. From memory I tried both tut and toot simultaneously and tut won me over. It's very similar. I found the config easy to modify and I like the key bindings. Admittedly I'm writing this from my Android web browser because your post popped up in my #RSS reader (I follow the #CLI fediverse hashtag), but when I'm at my laptop I'm on tut.

@mdreid oh wow I didn't know that. I had in my head anything git was pushed elsewhere. Mind blown.

2025-06-21

@mdreid I have used VSCode before, and quite like it, but there is a part of me that wants to stick with Helix and tmux to force myself onto keyboard muscle memory a bit more. Learning the hard way kind of thing.

2025-06-21

@mdreid Thanks Mark. I've always thought "branches" would be quite powerful, but never bothered to learn them. I'm ok with the rest, but maybe it's time to dive into branches. I guess there's also the question of "when to move to git" (I currently only have everything local, but I'm feeling now is maybe the time). Maybe I just start all of these coding projects from git from the "git go"!

@kalviter You folks are giving me some absolute gems to move forward. "Pseudo-code" sounds like another important piece to the puzzle. I like this one a lot! I'll probably work myself from mindmap to pseudo-code.

2025-06-21

@adamsteer Thanks Adam, it does help. I might look at pulling our Jupyter again to work on the side. It is also comforting to know that I am not alone that "chaos" springs to mind when working in this space! I've been pointed towards the FOSS Freeplane mindmapping tool, which I'm going to start using on the side as well to form up my bigger picture pathways.

@alecthegeek I can't believe how long it took me to finally try Linux, but there is absolutely no turning back for me now. I'm ever so lightly trying to convince my family to hop over too.

2025-06-21

@alecthegeek Thanks Alec. I love a mindmap so will definitely give this a go. Actually come to think of it, I've been doing this in my head, but I can see seeing it in front of me will help me to keep on a path.

Not sure of best process practices for #coding. I can't help but copying files over and over until I've got the code I want, then I come up with some new file structure to name it... and start all over again.

#HelixEditor (and #tmux is helping with split screens, file pickers, scratch buffers and whatnot, but sheesh I'm all over the place.

I'm guessing there is a lot that comes with experience. Maybe using git to its capabilities can assist. Maybe some written word as a side note helps. I used to use Jupyter but even that got to be a convoluted mess.

I'm certainly writing a lot more since my sporadic attempts when working in GIS, so maybe it's just that I'm starting to think about this more now.

Please send me some of your favourite tips!

Here I work in tmux, with helix in the top horizontal split (split vertically with 3 files I'm working on simultaneously), and the terminal below so I can run the code, and yazi bottom right so I can scroll around the files. I use the helix File Picker as well for this, but with all the CTRL-Bs and CTRL-Ws I get quite exhausted from it all.

@trode ha you've got some perseverance I don't have. The bios was in English thankfully so I just wiped it clean and installed Debian.

2025-06-01

@dhry I gave up in the end. Seems you need to go through a bit of a rigmarole to get a language service installed for Windows. I just wanted a sticky beak anyway before I wiped it. I just loaded a USB from bios and installed Debian. Trying out LXQt for something different. $30 was a steal in the end!

I had a hiatus from TV shows and movies for about 10 years. I didn't own a TV or download/stream anything. I was gifted a TV late last year, and well I'm back at it. It is really fun to be watching shows that have been around for a while, while I wasn't. I just watched Mr Robot S02E07 from 2016 and I must say that show is absolutely peaking for me right now. Maybe you felt that too 9 years ago? I'm also really digging Black Mirror. Halt & Catch Fire was a banger too. I'm trying not to binge them too much to make the last but sheesh it's hard!

@farooqkz My mind is blown! Added to my own project list. Thank you for sharing. Your engine sounds like a delight. Hope you land on a solution that works for you. Hope to see a post on your methods later when you land on something.

2025-05-31

@dhry sweet thanks! I changed to English in that Format section which didn't change anything so I'm trying the "Display Language" settings now (I think), but it's doing a Windows Update first (I also think).

2025-05-31

@farooqkz
I know nothing about search engines but this project of yours sounds unreal. Excuse my naiveness but is there much upkeep in something like this? Do you just add a bunch of domains to a list for it to appear in your search results?

2025-05-31

Scored a Lenovo C20-05 All-in-one (I think) for $30 off a couple who couldn't speak much English. They offered to turn it on to show me it works, but I said don't worry. Should've taken them up on it to change the language!
So the fun begins. Anyone know what I'm clicking?

Oh hey.
Been a minute.
Hope all is well.
Thought I'd wander the masto streets again to see what's new. I've been reading a lot of your stuff in RSS so I don't feel I've gone really far. Not sure what I think of my masto break. I don't miss it nor think it's done a world of difference. I guess I removed the social anxiety, but really, a few comments here and there is hardly socialising anyway. I guess THAT is a change of perspective. Maybe the pressure is off now. We'll see.

It's a long weekend here. Yet again I forgot to plan anything. Though I will be booking an August trip to Vietnam tomorrow. It's been a good 10 years since a proper holiday. I will be well and truly over winter by then so heading north will be welcome.

For now, after a bit of a browse around here, I'm off to the shops to get some mulch for the garden. And some toilet cleaner. Riveting stuff.
