Speaking of Unicode, the latest draft for UTS
#51 (the technical specification for emojis) includes a bit on how emoji pickers should emit emoji sequences with explicit gender, rather than rely on the default presentation showing a gender.
So, in essence, they're saying that if your default for 🤷 is a woman, then the picker should emit a ZWJ sequence specifying shrug + female.
Which is kinda backwards, because the default is supposed to be gender neutral, but instead of suggesting that, the document now throws up its arms and says "well, then at least make it explicit".
