@skinnylatte There was some discourse last year about the bill to allow speed cameras in California, #AB645.
I was initially supportive, but @bryanculbertson pointed out they directly compete for funds with implementing road diets, and showed based on East Bay budget data that road diets are more cost effective. And while on paper there are limitations on how the surveillance images can be used, it's pretty toothless even if I trusted cops to follow the law which I don't.

#AB645: San Jose is gearing up to install 33 of the devices next year at high-risk intersections, with the ultimate goal of reducing the dozens of people killed and hundreds severely injured each year in traffic collisions.
#AB645: This year, 45 people in San Jose have died from traffic-related incidents. Of those deaths, 24 were #pedestrians. Last year saw 65 deaths, the highest number of fatalities in the city’s modern history.
Today, we're in Sacramento with George & Liz, asking Senators to pass #AB645.
Speed is the #1 cause of severe & fatal crashes in CA.
Speed cameras are being used in 100+ US cities.
AB 645 would allow 6 CA cities to pilot this lifesaving technology. AB 645 must be passed by the Senate by September 14.

@ashedryden This is why I'm not thrilled with #AB645, the California speed camera bill. In theory the bill has privacy protections that prevent this, but do I trust all police to follow the law? Lol no.
A lot of people I know are supporting that bill for well-meaning pedestrian safety reasons. But the cameras aren't cheap and I'd rather the money get spent on road diets that slow drivers in the first place with more bang for buck and w/o these privacy pitfalls.
The fine for going / 600% / of the speed limit on a commercial corridor would be less than 160% that for evading a $2.5 muni fare 🫠 #ab645 #capol #sf #slowourstreets
