Still reflecting on how powerful it was to be in community with so many kind, caring, thoughtful, smart people at #ACH2024. It meant so much to spend a challenging week in your company, and I’m grateful for our fantastic planning team who approached the work with intention and love 🫶

In a #ACH2024 lightning talk session with lots of (not only) grad students making databases, I'm struck by how much progress we've made in the last 10 years. People are thinking of their data as data and not first as website. Long term stability is part of the conversation. It's beautiful to see.

For #ACH2024 folks & anyone else, here's @claudiaeberger.bsky.social @quinnanya.me & my "What is #DHmakes?" post if you keep seeing the hashtag and wonder what it's about & how to take part: literaturegeek.com/2024/09/26/w...

Props to Monika Dabrowska for saying at the top of her #ACH2024 presentation that she's most comfortable in Spanish and will be presenting in that language. The English slides are providing the highlights for folks who can't do Spanish. #MultilingualDH can be no big deal.

Talk two of two! A preview, if you will. I'm talking with Seanna Viechweg at #ACH2024 tonight on "Speculative Digital Pedagogies." We preemptively blogged a rough version of the talk we'll give later. Some thoughts about the past, present, and futures in digital pedagogy.

Thanks to a great suggestion in the #ACH2024 chat, we now have a Ravelry group for #DHmakes! All are welcome. www.ravelry.com/groups/dhmakes

Molly Morin has offered us 10 minutes for an interactive activity, knitting, petting cats, whatever feels good. Kiki does not understand why this isn't a standard part of all conference talks. #ACH2024

@drnikki.bsky.social points us to this podcast in the framework of remix. We already have the elements we need for a better, more liveable world, we just need to rearrange them. #ACH2024

Black Freedom Beyond Borders: ...

Molly Mori references Healther Schulte, "A Plague on Both Houses", cross-stitching through the NYT to form a kind of redaction. #DHmakes #ACH2024

@drnikki.bsky.social: getting trans-affirming care involves filling out forms in certain ways to conform to a standard narrative. You learn this in community. Analogizes it to redaction, like you'd get in response to a FOIA request. Molly Morin gives examples of artistic use of redaction. #ACH2024

2024-11-07

@drnikki.bsky.social notes that there's been an abandonment of boxes in forms for the organic (e.g. in Common App, with rounded shapes), but it's going towards biometric, fingerprint scans. Wavy lines can be(come) equally problematic. #ACH2024

2024-11-07

Molly Morin is looking towards art practice for defamiliarization exercises that we can apply to forms. Gesture drawing, negative space. The boxiness of the forms feels like "a brick wall", inherent rectilinearity of (especially) government forms. #ACH2024.

2024-11-07

@drnikki.bsky.social quoting Larkin 2023, "Infrastructures are material forms that allow for the possibility of exchange over space" -- can be information, ideas, not just things. Most visible when broken, like when there's no checkbox for some piece of your identity in a web form. #ACH2024

2024-11-07

Really appreciate @drnikki.bsky.social & Molly Morin checking in with the audience if we'd actually be up for the interactive, creative presentation they had planned. And when we were all in the chat saying we're in listening mode, they're retooling the plan on the fly. #ACH2024

2024-11-07

Listening to @drnikki.bsky.social on "Better Living Through Paperwork" at #ACH2024. "Trans-ness often has a lot of paperwork associated with it depending on the care we're looking for. How do those forms keep us from/facilitate access to those resources?" Forms as ideologies in built material world.

#ACH2025 virtual DH conference is next summer, June 11-13. FWIW I can't think of many (any?) other confs than #ACH2024 I'd show up to this week. Deeply grateful to the colleagues whose months of work, including long days this hard week, is giving us online space to be in community through this.

I’m exhausted after a sleepless night. But I’m picking myself up to prepare for #ACH2024, which starts in a few hours. Grateful to be in community with #DigitalHumanities folks as we come together to imagine new, more just futures. It will be, I hope, a care-full three days.

Today's the last day to register for #ACH2024, which starts on Wednesday. You won't want to miss three days of #DigitalHumanities presentations & conversations. Not to mention our ACH2024 virtual world—a 2D space you can navigate to experience installations/posters and chat with others

We’re 1 week out from #ACH2024. Here’s what conference planning looks like—an intricate system of sticky notes, scrap paper, note cards, and spreadsheets reminding me to do all the things 😆💪

My work station, featuring two MacBooks side by side, one displaying a screenshot in Slack, the other showing a spreadsheet of tasks. Yellow notecards, blue sticky notes and white scraps of paper cover the work space. A clip board holding the conference agenda rests on the keyboard tray
