From the article: "MEXICO CITY (AP) — It’s been called the closest the world has ever come to a vaccine against the AIDS virus.

"The twice-yearly shot was 100% effective in preventing HIV infections in a study of women, and results published Wednesday show it worked nearly as well in men.

"Drugmaker Gilead said it will allow cheap, generic versions to be sold in 120 poor countries with high HIV rates — mostly in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. But it has excluded nearly all of Latin America, where rates are far lower but increasing, sparking concern the world is missing a critical opportunity to stop the disease."

From the article: "Tens of thousands of people most vulnerable to contracting HIV are forced to pay for medication to prevent the virus, despite federal requirements guaranteeing free access to treatment that is critical to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States, according to multiple studies and interviews with medical professionals, activists and patients.

"Insurance companies are skirting rules compelling them to pay for pre-exposure prophylaxis treatment, known as PrEP, researchers and HIV advocacy organizations say — leaving patients to shell out hundreds of dollars each year for medication co-pays, doctor visits and screenings required to stay on drugs that reduce the risk of contracting HIV through sex by 99 percent.

"Under the Affordable Care Act, commercial insurers must cover certain preventive health services. This is supposed to include at least one form of oral PrEP and related health services, such as regular testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, for people at increased risk of contracting HIV, according to 2021 guidance from the Biden administration."

From the article: "This Sunday, the AIDS Memorial Quilt will return to Washington, D.C., at the White House, but unlike its previous appearance in 2012 — when only a small section was displayed in the East Wing — it will now stretch across the South Lawn in a sweeping, powerful tribute to lives lost to AIDS. It will be the first time the Quilt has been displayed on the lawn.

"The event, held in observance of World AIDS Day, will highlight both the progress made and the ongoing fight against HIV and AIDS. Nearly 50,000 panels — crafted with love, grief, and defiance — bear the names of over 105,000 people."
