I'm preparing another release of VoiceLab. Just need to compile on Windows.

Anyways the new release modifies Cepstral Peak Prominence to measure only voiced frames (with an option to turn this off for whatever reason), fixes for energy where it wouldn't work on compiled versions, and API updates for command line interface users.

Vocal fry really plays havoc with STRAIGHT's spectrogram. Normally you can't see harmonics, but when there is fry, it is highly notable.

Here's a running spectrogram with sound, featuring three of the birds from the Twelve Days of Christmas (recorded in May...)!

I’ve been using these wintery days to sort through the many sound files taken this year. Lots of bats, birds and insects. This one really stood out as being seasonally appropriate, so I thought I’d share it for fun.

This was recorded in France in late May and features Nightingale and Redstart song, but also:
Sound 4: Blackbird (Colly bird)
Sound 3: A French “hen” (ok, it’s a cockerel, but they make more noise…)
Sound 2: Turtle dove

A spectrogram featuring the songs of woodland birds. I have extracted three of the sounds from the Christmas birds. Sound 4 is the fluting call of a blackbird (or "Colly bird"). This appears as a fairly pure line, flowing up and down with the blackbird's notes. Sound 3 is a cockerel (or French hen). The cockerel's call produces many formants - repetitive lines up the height of the spectrogram. Sound 2 is a turtle dove, which produces a low purring. On the spectrogram, this appears as a long row of tiny lines as each note of the purr is very short and there are many of them.

I've begun a complete rewrite of the VoiceLab backend. It's enough hacking. Time to start from scratch. I won't change the measurements or anything... Just the GUI and the data pipeline to accommodate multiprocessing, and in doing so, I'll tidy up the codebase.

While I'm developing (will likely take many months), have a look at my latest release:
