I think I may have finished the main part of Aloft. I mean, out of what has been released so far. It was cool. I don't want to put spoilers without a CW so I'll just say it was something I enjoyed. But I'm pretty sure, based on the difficulty, that this is just a first stage kind of thing. I think there will probably be harder challenges as the game develops further.
My son was here when I got to the point where I was ready to conquer the last thing, and he really enjoyed seeing me win. He's very much into video games and I think he likes it that I am too. I always listen and indicate I'm following along when he talks about Fortnite.
I will say about Aloft: I enjoyed it more when I got to middle/late gameplay. I felt like I had a better idea of how much stuff I would need and how easy/difficult it would be to collect it.
That's something I always struggle with in survival/crafting games - how much of each resource will I need? Is it worth hoarding a ton of Resource A, or will it continue to be abundant? And will I still need it for later gameplay or will its relevance decrease?
We all know that figuring out how much you need and where you're going to store it is key for these danged games.
If you're thinking of playing it, here are my non-spoilery tips:
Pick an island that is not teeny tiny. It is the size of the base island, NOT the size of your final build on that island, that will determine how many animals you can have with you. If you choose a small island, you'll either have to trade up later, or be satisfied with very few critters.
Pick an island where you can grow at least one tree. Really it would be best to have room for several.
Pick an island with water on it.
Kudos to the developers, who did a great job. I mean, it's in early access, so you're still going to clip through stuff and have to unstick yourself, and there may be things that don't quite work (if your bird lays an egg too close to a crafting station, just give it up because you're not collecting that egg). But overall, it worked as expected and I mostly enjoyed it.
I've mentioned before that I really like the soundtrack. I was listening to it at work today, actually. I love the chords the composer used.
I do think they need to work a little bit on what recipes you find at which point, and link them more closely with whether you even have a chance of making those recipes. As an example that does NOT appear in the game (but to illustrate my point), imagine getting several recipes that need a crochet hook, but you can't get the crochet hook until a LOT later in the game. And the game doesn't TELL you that, so you keep finding recipes that require a crochet hook, you begin to think maybe you've missed a crochet hook somewhere along the way. It's like that.
But overall, I would say if you like crafting/survival games, this one is worth trying.
