I know someone who has an even more intense interest in historical Chinese board games than I do. He researches them and publishes recreations which range from mostly-guesswork to intensely accurate. This is one such game, a variant of Xiangqi that was quite popular many years ago (more popular than even the version that dominates today!) but which fell into disfavour over the centuries. It has the unusual property of playing from corner to corner instead of from edge to edge, giving it a very different strategic feel. #AncientChess #ChineseChess #Xiangqi #WoJiaoQi #HistoricalGaming #History
The box for the game is a very traditional Chinese box style: covered in "gold" (yellow) brocade with a single framed paper sticker containing the title of the game vertically on the left. The components inside are very much the product of small-press self-publication: a thick glossy stock paper board with small round pieces with the characters for the pieces on one side. Half are black, half are white. The board will look familiar-ish to any player of Xiangqi, only the "camp"/"palace" squares are on opposing corners instead of the middle of opposing sides. Some marked starting points are slightly shifted compared to the more modern game. The rules are just printed on laser printer on plain A4 stock.
