Book 28 is "Anno Dracula" by Kim Newman.

This sounds like an absolutely marvellous premise... Go and find the back jacket text if you can and have a read.

Edit: finished 7th May.

The cover of the book.

Laid out like a Victorian era circus/theatre/event poster, the title is in large letters at the top with a list of the six main characters underneath, and various quotes, enticements, and other sundry adornments in the same style.

I need to actually finish #AnnoDracula 1918 and see if Hans appears beyond the scene in the second pic but it's high-larious to me how much the wolf is associated with him in anything and in any way--yet Kim Newman said nah, vampire. XD

In his defense, Ennis also made that connection. With the way Hans is often approached in canon by Kanigher (e.g. "cold skin like death"), it's not *wholly* weird...

Meanwhile the inspiration for Hans, the real Red Baron, is a shapeshifter XD

Screenshot of a section from Anno Dracula. It reads:

Lothar stood aside for his brother. Rittmeister Freiherr Manfred von Richthofen was stripped to the waist, reddish fur wet and bristling. He was the best shape-shifter in JG1, main attraction of this Flying Freak Show. Usually reserved to the point of catatonia, Richthofen was in the grip of a passion. Killing Englishmen by night was not enough for him; he must hunt wild boar by day, as he had done as a child on his estates in Silesia.

The boar, imported God knows how and at what expense, wheeled and snarled at the hunter, froth dripping from its jaws. Richthogen stalked towards it. His feet were bare, but claw-spurts clicked on the stone. The boar, startled again, dashed off to one side.Screenshot of a section from Anno Dracula. It reads as follows:

The magnificent horn of the new gramophone rang with an aria from Die Fledermaus. Hammer, smugly, wearing the Pour le Mérite awarded him on his fortieth kill, played cards with Kretschmar-Schuldorff, the intelligence officer, and Ernst Udet, a promising flier neck and neck with Stalhein in victories. Grouped around an oil lamp, they were dwarfed by the vaulted space. Hammer was buried in a huge bearskin coat that made him look like a troll.Four panels of a comic page. There are two main figures here, where the man, a soldier, is holding a woman gently. The woman, a nurse, is running away from him later and then meets up with another nurse. Text in speech bubbles and captions are as follows:

Caption: Suddenly, I broke off the kiss when I realized...

Hans: She is...frightened! I can feel her heart pound beneath me--as if she were a swallow caught in a net!

Caption: As the beautiful nurse fled...

Hans: Perhaps...if I remain here...perfectly still...she will get over her fear...and return?...

Caption: But shortly, below me...I overheard her in the night...

Nurse: Like every other woman throughout Germany--I dreamed of being held in von Hammer's arms--but--his touch chilled me--

Hans (thinking): Even the night cannot conceal the truth! I have the touch of death! On the ground--as well as in the air!Collage of two pages, the first page taking up most of the space. We see a shot of an old German castle in Bavaria, 1942. This takes up most of the page, with the bottom half of the page being allotted for two panels. A very fancy car has been parked, likely belonging to the, uh, Nazi soldier who's knocking on the door...Anyway, here's what he says:

Peter: Christ almighty, he lives in Castle Dracula...

Below that are two panels from the next page that would go after it, again, pasted a la collage. The owner of the castle has opened the door and is welcoming the soldier inside.

Hans: Welcome to Castle von Hammer. Please come in.

Peter: Freely and of my own will?

Hans: I'm sorry?

Peter: Forget it.

My Halloween #reading careened out of control this year and I ended up bingeing the first three parts of #KimNewman's #AnnoDracula series. Smart & satirical, shocking & hilarious, I've loved every moment of this horror/thriller/alt history romp. Can't recommend highly enough 📕 🧛‍♂️ #books #BookMastodon
