We treat post-doctoral researchers the way we treat sessional tutors: exploit them for their labour & intellectual property, then spit them out. A select few who are willing & able to play the games our research funding models require (designing projects that match the political times , then being named on a maximum number of publications - an inevitable incentive to dodgy research practice & ongoing exploitation of non-tenured staff) achieve tenure & build high profile careers. The rest of us suffer moral injury & burnout.
