We played the "learning scenario" of BattleLore. @htdrake won, but we're both a bit mystified as to how; she rolled worse (as is her wont), lost more figures, and didn't feel that she knew what she was doing.
She expressed that wargames are more frustrating than economic eurogames, because you're losing things rather than building them. It strikes me that Go straddles this in an interesting way: beyond a certain skill level, players can see trouble coming and avoid actual capture. There's even a Go proverb, "big groups don't die". That said, strong Go players play at the razor's edge of their abilities, so occasionally something big does die.
