1000 Day Album Challenge (#11) Black Science Orchestra: Walter’s Room (1996) [11.01.24]

I’m hoping you’re having a great time tonight / the DJ he has class…

House Music was my entry into truly discovering Disco and learning its history beyond the Top 40 hits that many people know. British Soul Boy, Ashley Beedle (Black Science Orchestra, Ballistic Brothers, X-Press 2, East Village Loft Society, and too many other groups and aliases to list) certainly counts as one of my spiritual guides on this journey.

the sound of Walter’s Room is quite steeped in the soulful disco sound of the seventies associates with Philadelphia International Records. the title of the record is an homage to Walter Gibbons, one of the key early underground DJs who primarily played at Galaxy 21 in NYC. he was known to be the most highly skilled of the early DJs.

Jellybean Benitez claimed “I’d heard a lot of DJs. I’d heard Nicky Siano, David Mancuso, Larry Levan and Richie Kaczor, but Walter did a lot of things that I had never heard anyone do. Technically he was brilliant, and he was adventurous, and not only did he do long blends, but he also did lots of quick cuts similar to what I heard in the Bronx growing up.” (daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/)

at the time, there were plenty of House Music compilations to which I listened but probably very few single artist studio albums that I listened to from start to finish. most of them were needle drops for me - one, two or maybe three tracks that I would listen to but not the whole thing. Walter’s Room is well worth a full listen
