Mâchoires de Monica Ojeda m'a tenu une petite semaine. Mêlant body horror, secte adolescente et relations toxiques, il met en parallèle une prof de lettres obsédée par sa mère et dévorée par son trouble anxieux, et ses élèves, un groupe d'adolescentes riches qui trompent l'ennui en se donnant des défis de plus en plus dangereux.
La langue de Ojeda est poétique, l'ambiance glauque à souhait. J'ai eu l'impression de me retrouver à la croisée de Psychose et d'un roman de Mariana Enriquez. J'en ressors avec la conviction que les adolescentes font de très bons personnages de récits horrifiques - elles sont terrifiantes.

#LetterboxdFriday time, these are my #LastFourWatched. Saw a lot of cool stuff this week, Infinity Pool (not shown) was bonkers, 13th Floor (not shown) was ok - but The Beach House here is the clear winner, for me- FAIR WARNING if you watch it, it is a SUPREMELY gross, weird, movie with extreme body horror, dread, and no real answers. And I loved EVERY SECOND of it. 😂 Now among my top favorites.

A human in the center of a manila bookmark is covered from head to toe in red purple dark lines, in clusters often of 4 to 5 lines. They represent itching and scratching and cover the entire body some in long scratches and itches which go the length of a chin or from a hip down to almost the knee and some in short little bursts. They curve around body shapes, so even though there is nothing underneath them, the way they wrap around things imply the anatomical structures underneath. Some people say these lines evoke muscle diagrams, despite the fact they zig and zag around the body in ways which are not muscular. The hands are dramatically stylized, fingers splayed and holding tension, as if about the begin scratching again.

Diagnosis: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

After self-diagnosing, I got an official diagnosis. The victory of the official diagnosis was upstaged by the foot trauma two days previously, which I now know is a broken bone. However, at lest it’s in the same limb as all my other orthopedic trauma and severe arthritis. That’s really my saving grace right now — it’s a familiar injury. Adding another new mystery set of symptoms would be less welcome than rehatching an old burden.

Anyway, back to the art. I love some of the light interactive properties here that are hard to capture in a scan so:

Reflective properties close up, gold paint in the eyes, green metallic reflection for the dark around and in the eyes. The shimmer (ultra fine glittering particles) in the green ink are vibrant blue, and in the blue zebra stripes are color shifting, right now a rose.

Metallic version of the hardware in my leg — I looked at my own x-rays for reference!
