Borgward went bust in 1961 but there is a happy ending to the story. The factory in Bremen was acquired by the van-maker Hanomag, later Hanomag-Henschel. This was later taken over by Mercedes, which produced its popular T1 van there. In 1978, passenger car production returned to the site with the S123 ‘T’ estate models based on the W123. I saw this 1.3 million km example at Techno Classica Essen in 2013. Tough cars.
Today, the Borgward P100, the ‘Big Borgward’. This top-of-the-range model was introduced in 1959, and only about 2,500 were made before Borgward went out of business in 1961. The main highlights were its straight-six engine and the pioneering use of air suspension. I saw this one at Techno Classica Essen in 2013.
Today we’re moving up to the heart of the Borgward range with the much larger Isabella, probably the company’s best-known car, produced from 1954. Offered in a wide range of handsome body styles. I saw this estate version at Techno Classica Essen in 2018. Note the side-hinged tailgate. One more Borgward tomorrow.
Today, after Lloyd, two more brands from the Borgward stable, here embodied in a single vehicle - Goliath and Hansa. Meet the Hansa 1100, originally introduced in 1957 as the Goliath 1100, seen here in its panel van version at the Bremen Classic Motor Show in 2014. Also available as a saloon, a coupé and an estate. ‘Hansa’ is presumably a reference to the Hanseatic League, of which Borgward’s home city Bremen was a member.
In 1959, the Lloyd Alexander I posted the day before yesterday was joined by its larger eventual replacement, the Arabella. This was initially badged as a Lloyd (first car, bonnet up, Techno Classica 2017) but took the name of Lloyd’s parent Borgward in 1961, as in the case of the second car, seen here appropriately at the 2014 Bremen Classic Motor Show (Bremen was the home of Lloyd/Borgward). Advanced but troublesome car - FWD, boxer engine.
Today, one more tiny 1950s sub-Volkswagen car in the form of the front-wheel drive Lloyd 600/Alexander. Lloyd was part of Borgward. I saw the yellow Lloyd Alexander at Techno Classica Essen in 2013. The red car, snapped at Techno Classica in 2023, is the slightly sportier TS version, introduced in 1958. More on how a German car ended up with a Welsh name tomorrow.

The Isabella was to have been marketed as the Borgward Hansa 1500 but name was used on test vehicles and proved popular with engineering staff and media.
