Mayors are powerful and we saw that when @wutrain.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy decided to create the #BostonSafetySurge and stop with the Hunger Games style of giving neighborhoods safe streets and just do it And we saw it when she paused all safe street improvement projects last year bostoncyclistsunion.org/sscw

Why is Boston a million miles behind our neighbors both in building green infrastructure and being able to communicate clearly about it? @jfh01.bsky.social Did Josh Kraft actually win the election? Why has @wutrain.bsky.social shut down all her popular street safety programs? #BostonSafetySurge

The #BostonSafetySurge was an innovative program from @wutrain.bsky.social & @jfh01.bsky.social to end the "Hunger Games" style contest between neighborhoods for speed humps and fast track this best practice for #TrafficCalming Love to see Cambridge following suit! @mass.streetsblog.org

terms of representation and power I'm thrilled with good policies like the #BostonSafetySurge where she allowed BTD to implement best practices to make city streets safer But she still strikes me as an incrementalist. Housing hasn't been able to be accelerated. I'm confused by "Squares+ Streets"

Home building is subject to macroeconomic forces so that's not fully in her control And with street safety I give her administration massive credit and appreciation for the #BostonSafetySurge Unleashing the ability to deploy speed humps in all neighborhood absolutely saved lives

She's since taken all these #BostonGreenNewDeal policies off her website menus but I found them inspiring. And took her seriously. Breaking trust is hard to recover These are excellent goals and she's done great work with the #BostonSafetySurge!

Taking on traffic
Boston has been ranked as having the worst rush-hour traffic in the country, and our transportation infrastructure has not kept pace with the growing population and number of commuters. We must take action to empower commuters with reliable, safe multimodal options and public transit, evaluate congestion pricing, and manage curbside space for pick up and drop off from ride-hailing vehicles and delivery trucks that slow traffic and block bike lanes and sidewalks when parked.Ensuring pedestrian safety
Boston’s streets should be safe for all road users, but too often residents who have been sounding the alarm on dangerous speeding hotspots don’t see safety improvements until after a tragedy occurs. We must ensure access to traffic calming infrastructure improvements citywide, maintain crosswalks and pedestrian-friendly signal timing, and expand sidewalks during the pandemic to allow for safe distancing.Building a safe, connected, low-stress cycling network
Boston is committed to increasing our share of commuting trips by bike to move more people on our streets and reach our climate and public health goals, but to do this, cycling must be safe and connected. We must accelerate progress in building protected cycling infrastructure with a focus on equity, so every neighborhood has access to safe cycling options.Improving bus service
Although the MBTA is a state agency, buses run on municipal roads, so city government can play a big role in making bus service more reliable and equitable. We must speed up the design and implementation of dedicated bus lanes in our most congested corridors, expand transit signal priority, and evaluate the location and condition of bus stops.
