In this week's exciting instalment of The Router Chronicles, we feature ridiculously overfed devices. The bottom pair here, 4451-Xs, each have 16GB RAM. Sadly the NIM form factor makes module additions a more expensive proposition than [EH]WICs & friends, but I offset that disadvantage by stuffing the ISRs above with a ridiculosity of goodies with blinkenlights aplenty. Internal VPN/encryption modules & even phatter PVDM3s are on their imminent snack menu, because reasons.

Work-in-progress view of 5 Cisco routers that are bristling with modules & interfaces. Top to bottom are a 2921, two 2901s and two 4451-X routers. The most striking & conspicuous feature in this shot is a full-width intelligent etherswitch module in the top (2921) router's lower slots. This has 48 copper UTP ports and 2 SFPs.

Mischief, a young adult female medium longhair mackerel tabby cat, relaxing as she loafs on top of a stack of four Cisco routers, with her hands draped over the edge of them. She's looking up with innocence in her eyes.

A hobby of mine is to take vanilla hardware and then pimp the living hell out of it. What started life as a vanilla Cisco 2921 router has now become this chonky ultraswouter with handlebars for ears: 2.5GB RAM, 256 PVDM3 channels (soon to become 512), a fun 48-port layer 3 switch module (effectively a 3560G-48), a 4-port 1Gbps etherswitch module, an HWIC-4T serial module, a 1Gbps SFP module, a 2 port T1/E1 module configured as 2 E1s, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Why? Because I can.

These four Cisco routers, received via eBay yesterday, cost me a total of £60.01p delivered, with a surprise bonus of a pair of HWIC-1T modules thrown in. BARGAIN! All only have the ipbasek9 license, but that's OK. They all had prior config that was still active and I had to break into them to erase them, but that's not too hard once you know how.

The 1921 is a natural upgrade/replacement for my many beloved 1841s.
