Meet Kave, the principal female deity on Nukuoro, in the Caroline Islands. It’s slightly larger than life size and I found it incredibly striking. I love how much like modern art this feels, despite having come from a remote island in the 1800s. Auckland War Memorial Museum.

The Mariana fruit bat (#PteropusMariannus), also known as the Mariana flying fox, and the fanihi in #Chamorro, is a #megabat found only in the #MarianaIslands and #Ulithi (an #atoll in the #CarolineIslands). #HabitatLoss has driven it to endangered status, and it is listed as threatened by the #USFishAndWildlifeService. #Poaching, habitat loss, and the introduction of #invasiveSpecies have contributed to the species' decline.
