When the Roman Republic was in its final century, civil wars were common, and so were proscriptions.

Words mean things.

I don’t make the rules.

The #American #Catiline won.

There be reckoning by men with guns.

Before he was "Magnus," Pompey was
“adulescens carnifex”, Sulla's "teenaged butcher."

Pompey is said to have told a group of civilians when they questioned his legal jurisdiction:

“Don't quote laws to men with swords."remember Sulla

To be frank, as a #history nerd, it’s like living in Rome 89-90 CE.

Or the post-Spartacus years a century earlier.

#Catiline Was Wicked

The Catilinarian Conspiracy of 63 BCE was a symptom of #dysfunction in the late #Roman Republic. It foreshadowed the rise of Roman imperialism.

Instability & Corruption

The conspiracy emerged in a climate of intense rivalry and public corruption that was dominating the political atmosphere of the late #Republic.

The #American Founders were obsessed with #Catiline, and that’s what we are dealing with now, as we’ve repressed memories of patriotic #virtues.

"the Catilines and the Caesars of the community...who leading the dance to the tune of liberty without law, endeavor to intoxicate the people with delicious but poisonous draughts to render them the easier victims of their rapacious ambition; the vicious and the fanatical of every class who are ever found the willing or the deluded followers of those seducing and treacherous leaders."When, O Catiline, do you mean to cease abusing our patience? How long is that madness of yours still to mock us? When is there to be an end of that unbridled audacity of yours, swaggering about as it does now?

Caveat: Anything that references #Catiline and the Catilinarian conspiracy is •automatically• at least 5/10 for me and can only go up from there.

The #history nerds out there will note that not only did Julius Caesar also load himself with debt to fund the army which he would use to incite an insurrection against the Republic, but the #American founders of the #Enlightenment valued #virtue above all and viewed #Caesar (and #Catiline) as wicked usurpers of their nations.

Just sayin’ 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think Jan 6 was when #Catiline made his attempt to overthrow the Republic.

We hit the iceberg then, and have been pretending otherwise ever since.

The Founding Fathers held both #Catiline and #Caesar in deep contempt.

Anybody telling you otherwise is probably a fascist, reactionary, or mendacious fuck.

More echos of the Republic than Empire.

The #American founders obsessively worried about the vices of #Catiline and wickedness of Caesar.

And that was without the natural vicissitudes of the environment wreaking havoc.
