What are we measuring?
High performance Ni K-edge XANES of pristine NMC 442 and NMC 811 battery electrodes. The change in the Ni K-edge position reflects the change in Ni oxidation state related to the different NMC compositions.

1) Roberto Car and Michele Parrinello for enabling molecular dynamics within a quantum field
2) Walter Kohn won the Nobel for discovering DFT, but Perdew and Becke made the theory practical and very accurate to use

XES Fe Kβ (Kbeta) spectra of Fe oxides (Fe2O3) at low weight percentages in carbon binder (PEG) as low as 0.25 wt. % Fe.
Measurement time of 4 mins per sample, XES is well suited for low elemental concentrations.
