Tereska, a young girl living in a Warsaw facilty for children suffering from the trauma of war. Having survived a German concenteation camp, Tereska was asked to draw a depiction of ‘Home’ on the blackboard.

In 1948 photographer David Seymour (Also known as Chim) was commissioned by UNICEF + UNESCO to document the lives of European children who had their first experience of life in an atmosphere of war, living their formative years in underground shelters, bombed cities, refugee trains and concentration camps. For the project Chim visited Austria, Greece, Italy, Hungary and Poland for six months, shooting a total of 257 rolls of film. The photo series ‘Children of Europe’ was first published in Life Magazine in 1948, and in book format in 1949.
