Just read a book on overfishing of cod. Many fisherpeople wanted rules then could seek self-interest within the rules. Cool.

How can you consider in your private life how to avoid abetting systems with incurable iniquity?

“... as the virtue of private individuals appears unable to restrain them from entering into [the slave trade], that it is the duty of our legislature, both to God and man, by an immediate act of abolition to prevent those at least, who are under its jurisdiction, from acting either as principals, abettors, or accomplices, in a system of such incurable iniquity."
