What we lose when casual nudity disappears

Not long ago, after a day of work, a colleague and I met for a friendly game of racquetball at our university gym. In the newly designed locker room, I began pulling off my shirt to change when he quickly stopped me: “You can’t do that here.” Undressing, it turned out, was now permitted only in small private stalls—which struck me as odd. This was a gym with a pool, where someone could go directly from a shirts-on locker room to a shirtless swim. But the logic was clear enough: The space had been redesigned as “universal,” for people of all genders. The locker room, once a place for casual and normative nudity, had quietly become a place where modesty was expected.
My Seattle gym is far from the only one to adopt the practice. Though public nakedness isn’t completely gone, many of the everyday spots where Americans once encountered unclothed bodies—locker rooms, school showers, public pools, bathhouses—have either vanished or shifted away from collective nudity. In 2017, Athletic Business, a trade publication for sports-facility design and management, reported that communal showers without curtains or dividers had virtually disappeared from new construction. This year, a different trade publication noted that one of the prevailing trends in locker-room design is privacy, a way to make “a diverse user base” feel comfortable.
It’s a striking reversal. For more than a century, the cultural norm in the United States was that nudity was acceptable—at least within same-sex environments...

A motorcyclist who punched a cyclist taking part in a World Naked Bike Ride, causing him to crash, before assaulting two police officers, has avoided a prison sentence.
Lee Turnage, a 46-year-old binman, was riding his motorbike through Colchester during the city's annual naked bike ride event on Saturday 9th August, held in conjunction with several other events around the world.
The prosecution told the court that Turnage was first spotted making indecent gestures and “shaping his fist” as he rode his motorcycle past the group on Hythe Hill.
The cyclist then reported he heard Turnage’s engine revving before seeing the motorcyclist perform a U-turn to head back up the hill. 46-year-old Turnage then punched the cyclist in the head, causing him to crash. The court later heard he believed the cyclists to be "sexual predators" and "perverts". The cyclist suffered grazing to his hands, arms and legs and his e-bike was broken beyond repair by the crash...

Germans may have a hard-won reputation for being Europe’s most enthusiastic nudists, but a survey suggests Danes are not only more accepting of stripping off in public, but more likely to have actually done so.
The YouGov survey of six western European countries – the UK, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Spain – found that Danes were the most likely to say it was perfectly OK to bare all in public places – and to have followed through.
Unsurprisingly, large majorities across all six countries agreed it was fine to strip off in dedicated naturist spots, with 84-94% having no issues with private nudist camps and 77-91% fine with nudist beaches, though 17% of French and Italians objected.
But while most people in all countries surveyed disapproved of nudity in places such as public swimming pools or parks, 35% of Danes felt it was OK to strip off on a non-nudist beach and 87% believed it was fine to be naked in your garden...

Intergenerational friction, Carry On-style bawdiness and ecocide-era despair collide in Naturism, playwright Ang Collins’s mainstage debut – an 85-minute, bare-all comedy set on a remote bush block somewhere in Victoria.
For the past few decades, three Gen-X naturists have been building an off-grid utopia among the gum trees, convinced they’re living sustainably and in harmony with Mother Earth.
Here, they are free – free to pursue their dreams, free to be gloriously naked. Yet for a community founded on freedom, it’s curiously rule-bound, thanks mostly to commune leader Ray (Glen Hazeldine), a former CEO turned guru who has codified his wisdom into a tome of commandments known as The Thingy.
Resident philosopher Sid (Nicholas Brown) finds comfort in the rules, his zeal for order making him Ray’s ideal and indefatigable disciple.
But for Helen (Hannah Waterman), a former performance artist now marooned in a loop of craft projects and birdwatching, the idyll has gone stale. After years estranged from her creative life – and from the messy, alluring chaos of the city – she’s ready to reach for her stash of hallucinogenic mushrooms. After all, there’s only so much joy to be wrung from weaving hats for the same three people.
Disruption, novelty and terror arrives in the form of Evangeline (Camila Ponte Alvarez), a burned-out twenty-something Instagram celeb. She wants to stay, recover, process the abundant contradictions of her content-making … but according to The Thingy, “intruders” are not welcome...

Clearly, Mark Savage’s film is an earnest attempt to bring Christianity to the nudist community and make the case for nudism—or naturism—in the Bible. Let me speak to the case for nudism first. As someone who has served on a church staff and holds a seminary degree, this film would not fly in any of the churches I’ve been to. Nudity is not their thing and has been frowned upon, and I doubt you’ll find any recommendation from them.
The film cites several scriptures that claim to support nudity. See the film for their viewpoint—it’s worth considering. I’ll say two things. In my opinion, the Bible doesn’t outright say that nudity is not a sin… nor does it say it is a sin. A lot of times, we want the Bible to support our views when, instead, the Bible says nothing about the subject. “Fearfully and wonderfully made” is about the value God places on His creation, not a license for nudity.
At the same time, what the film gets right is the idea from 1 Corinthians, where it says, “‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say—but not everything is beneficial.” God doesn’t explicitly call nudism a sin, making it “lawful.” The issue is whether it’s beneficial. My understanding of the community is that it’s an expression, not a chance to get off on the ample supply of boobs and pee-pees. No judgment here—it’s just not my thing.

Hidden among 96 wooded acres in Crownsville, Maryland, the Pine Tree Associates Nudist Club has been quietly cultivating sunshine, serenity, and self-acceptance since 1934—long before the Capital Beltway or the phrase “body positivity” existed.
Founded by a group of Washington–Baltimore friends seeking a natural escape during the Great Depression, Pine Tree began on the Keyes family farm, just north of Annapolis. Members turned the old farmhouse into a clubhouse, swam in the pond, and celebrated outdoor living decades before “wellness retreats” were a thing.
In 1958, the Keyes family officially transferred ownership to the members, forming Pine Tree Associates, Inc.—a cooperative club managed entirely by those who use it. Nearly a century later, that same community spirit thrives across its leafy acreage beside the Bacon Ridge Natural Area.
A Day in the Bare Woods
Just 45 minutes from Old Town Alexandria, Pine Tree is tucked into a quiet corner of Anne Arundel County—close enough for a day trip but far enough to feel like another world. A small sign marks the entrance, leading to a property filled with trees, trails, and friendly faces.
There’s an outdoor pool, indoor pool, sauna, and hot tub, plus tennis courts, volleyball, hiking paths, and a large clubhouse. On weekends, families and retirees mingle over potlucks and games. It feels less like a secret society and more like summer camp—with fewer tan lines...

Graignamanagh man Tom Grace is daring to bare it all this November at the Mater Hospital Foundation's Dickie Dip event to raise vital funds for men's cancer care the Mater Hospital, all in memory and honour of his beloved father Paddy.
Tom, who is also a member of the Mater Hospital Foundation fundraising team, is going above and beyond this winter and joining 500 men on the beach in Skerries who will take a chilly dip in the Irish sea in nothing but a dickie bow and a smile.
Tom's Dad Paddy from Fairview, Graignamanagh was diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed away in December 2024. Many in the community will know Paddy, who was a renowned goalkeeper and captain of the 1973 Kilkenny team that won the All-Ireland Intermediate title.
Tom says, “What would my Dad think? Well, he'd definitely tell us we are mad fools to be charging into the sea at that time of year, but he'd be pleased as punch that his memory is helping others...

It's 10pm, and I'm in a sweltering sauna in northern Italy with my friend.
We're both covering our modesty (and English prudishness) with towels while our European counterparts let it all hang out.
Suddenly, in comes a semi-naked man wearing a felt hat, who begins twirling a towel over our heads and placing orbs of ice on the rocks, all to the sonic backdrop of Westlife's cover of The Rose.
Just when things could not get any more surreal, he pulls a big black fan seemingly out of thin air (or thick, on this occasion) and wafts the hot currents in our faces in time to the music.
No, this was not a hallucination brought on by overheating.
This was aufguss: a German-originated sauna tradition which takes the simple act of pouring water on the hot stones and cranks the pizzazz dial up to 10 to create a theatrical experience like no other.
Thankfully, the ritual was shorter than a play or a film, clocking in at a streamlined 12 to 15 minutes, as the heat was very intense - 85 degrees Celsius to be precise...

Armand Mila, executive director of HTP "Ulcinjska rivijera", within which the nudist resort operates, said that compared to last year, revenues increased by 25 percent, while the number of overnight stays was two thousand higher.
"This indicates a serious and responsible approach by management, considering that, by all accounts, the season was generally weaker by 15-20 percent compared to last year," Mila told "Vijesti".
He stated that improving infrastructure, renovating several accommodation facilities, putting sports fields into operation, digitalizing the system through a unified centralized program, a free Wi-Fi network throughout the entire settlement, as well as improving the beach offerings and building a beach bar, along with installing a ramp, have significantly contributed to Ada attracting a larger number of guests.
"These investments and improvements have enabled us to create a more attractive and comfortable environment for our visitors. Renovated accommodation facilities and sports fields contribute to a more diverse offer, while the improved offer on the beach and the beach bar further enrich the experience of staying. There’s a Spanish medieval village, built a thousand years ago, off the grid with intermittent and limited power. Wells have dried up (I started drinking my pasta water, feeling too guilty to tip it down the sink) and there’s a four-kilometre driveway with no town at the end of it, just a road. No internet. No alcohol allowed, no clothes, no washing machine. I love to make rules for myself and I told myself I would spend a month there, naked.
Before we go any further, let me save you from the social faux pas you will want to commit: calling this place a ‘nudist colony’. That phrase died in the ’60s. This is a naturist community.
The naturists’ thesis is simple: bodies are just bodies. But can a body actually be ‘just a body’? I wondered this, as I removed my op shop Laura Ashley dress in the apartment that would be mine for the next month. The only mirror was bathroom-mounted and brochure-sized, decorated with a constellation of toothpaste spatter.
The population of the village swells to 100 in summer and dwindles to around 20 permanent residents in winter. Every day, I’d mop my floor. I’d watch the sun move across my medieval stone walls. I learnt the goats’ individual personalities. When it was windy and therefore a spot of electricity was being generated, I’d run back to my apartment and plug my phone in to charge...

A nudist beach in Scotland has been named one of the best in the UK. The "off the beaten track" bay can only be reached by ferry.
On Tuesday, October 7, BBC Countryfile shared a list of "the best nudist beaches in the UK". A total of nine beaches across the nation are featured on the roundup.
Among the beaches singled out by BBC Countryfile was Cleat’s Shore on the Isle of Arran. According to the experts, the island bay is thought to be the "only official nudist beach" in Scotland.
Cleat’s Shore is situated near Lagg on the southwest tip of Arran, which is the biggest of the islands in the Firth of Clyde. It was previously described in the book Bare Britain as "probably the least visited nudist beach in the known universe".
The beach was noted by BBC Countryfile for its remote location. The experts also stated that Cleat’s Shore would appeal to beachgoers who enjoy "icy" conditions.

Cleat’s Shore is situated near Lagg on the southwest tip of Arran, which is the biggest of the islands in the Firth of Clyde. It was previously described in the book Bare Britain as "probably the least visited nudist beach in the known universe".
The beach was noted by BBC Countryfile for its remote location. The experts also stated that Cleat’s Shore would appeal to beachgoers who enjoy "icy" conditions.

A naked bike ride being billed as a protest to Trump’s illegal invasion of Portland has been scheduled for Sunday, October 12th at 2:30 pm.
The “Emergency World Naked Bike Ride” is being organized by the group that created a second naked bike ride in 2024 when Portland’s original version took the year off. The two rides have very similar names (World Naked Bike Ride Portland and Portland World Naked Bike Ride) which has caused some confusion. The riding club behind the ride, Naked Hearts PDX, has led hundreds of group rides and is known for the heart-shaped speaker box and sound system pulled behind a cargo trailer.
The organizers who are behind this “emergency” ride say there’s is distinct from the other one in its commitment to direct action. Their first ride in September 2024 included a die-in in front of the headquarters of Zenith Energy in the Northwest Industrial District.

Autumn has arrived today, bringing rain (which is sorely needed here too) and wind; summer is definitely over. But I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy a few warm afternoon hours on 1 and 2 October, soaking up the last warming rays of sunshine at (and in) the swimming pond at https://www.LBN-Duisburg.de.
I took it easy each day and set off on a bike ride in the late morning. At around 1 p.m., I arrived at the LBN grounds to take advantage of the sunny weather and soak up some vitamin D for 2-3 hours. As it was almost windless, it was simply perfect sunshine so late in the year and definitely the last opportunity for the foreseeable future, and it was probably my last swim of the year.
