On Walhalla Plateau, firefighters will reinforce the lines they have put in and explore areas where secondary lines would be effective. Fire leadership will consider options for addressing the run that was made into Kwagunt drainage yesterday. Around the rest of the fire’s perimeter, crews will patrol and monitor, looking for areas that can be put into “controlled” status.

Weather and Smoke: Today the fire area will see near critical fire weather but no Red Flag Warning. Winds will be considerably calmer than what was experienced yesterday. Humidity will continue to be very low until the middle of next week. Smoke will remain visible from surrounding areas, including the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Residents and visitors impacted by the smoke are encouraged to monitor local air quality conditions here.

Highlights: During the Red Flag weather yesterday, gusts registered up to 52 mph in the fire area. Despite high and unpredictable winds, progress was made in some areas and lines were held over most of the fire perimeter. To the north, fire descended east towards House Rock Valley but did not expand north. On Walhalla Plateau, crews completed the dozer line across the plateau, but the fire dropped off the plateau and made a run down the Kwagunt drainage. In the southwest corner of the fire, crews made some progress towards establishing an anchor point near the head of Crystal Canyon. At the same time, lines were extended towards that point from Kaibab Lodge.

Operations: The Dragon Bravo fire continues to be a full-suppression effort. On the north end, firefighters will continue patrolling the lines to keep the fire from progressing into the fuel rich forest and divert it into sparse fuels to the east. If it does proceed east towards House Rock Valley, firefighters will meet it when it reaches manageable terrain. Firelines have already been established to protect resources in the area. In the southwest corner, progress will continue to connect dozer line coming down from Kaibab Lodge and to establish the anchor point at the head of Crystal Canyon. Both direct and indirect strategies will continue to be employed there.

Operations: To the north, ground and air resources will continue putting in fireline to keep the fire from extending north or northwest. This strategy will run it into territory where it will quickly run out of fuel. In the southwest, firefighters will continue working to establish an anchor point from which they can safely build more containment lines. The roads group will assist them in approaching the fire from downwind. Managers are seeking a new strategy on the Walhalla Plateau to prevent fire below the rim from trapping firefighters if it spots on top of the plateau. On the remainder of the perimeter, crews are patrolling established lines and seeking areas that can be declared contained.

Daily Update for August 6, 2025

Acres: 130,520
Containment: 13%
Personnel: 1,343

Public Meeting: Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 2 will host a public meeting for the Dragon Bravo Fire tonight, August 6th, in the CAB Auditorium, Page High School, 434 S Lake Powell Blvd, Page, Arizona at 6 PM Arizona Time. Speakers will include members of the team and administrators from Kaibab National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park. The meeting will be livestreamed on the Dragon Bravo Facebook page: facebook.com/2025dragonbravo. ASL and live captioning will be provided. Please park on the side next to the football field.

Highlights: Yesterday the fire spotted across the lines on the north end of the fire. Both ground and air resources worked to minimize the growth of this new front. Firefighters continued their efforts to stop the steady growth in the southwest area but the intensity of the wind-blown fire behavior kept them from going direct. Despite this, progress was made on containment lines in the area. On the Walhalla Plateau, crews made similar efforts but met with similar results.

Operations: Crews will continue to work the southwest corner of the fire and are expected to go direct as well as building contingency lines to control the advance of the fire in that area. Crews will also go direct on the creeping fire on the Walhalla Plateau. On the remainder of the fire’s perimeter crews will continue to patrol and monitor established lines to be ready to address any spotting across those lines. Water tenders will continue to perform the intricate job of drawing from multiple sources to supply up to 140,000 gallons of water per day for both ground and air operations.

Weather and Smoke: Humidity will begin to rise, but fire weather remains near critical. Cloud cover will increase. Winds may reach 30 mph. There is a 10% chance of showers which are not expected to bring significant precipitation. Smoke will remain visible from surrounding areas, including the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Residents and visitors impacted by the smoke are encouraged to monitor local air quality conditions at outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net.

Evacuations & Closures: Information about current closures on Grand Canyon National Park can be found on the National Park Service website nps.gov/grca/northrimstatus.ht. The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will remain closed for the duration of the 2025 season.

Public Meetings: Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 2 will host a public meeting tonight, August 5th at the Fredonia High School, 221 E Hortt Street, Fredonia, Arizona. In Page, a public meeting will be held on Wednesday,

August 6th in the CAB Auditorium Page High School, 434 S Lake Powell Blvd, Page, Arizona. Both public meetings will be held at 6 PM MST (Arizona Time). Speakers will include members of the team and administrators from Kaibab National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park. Both meetings will be livestreamed on the Dragon Bravo Facebook page. ASL and live captioning will be provided.

Highlights: Hotshot crews, assisted by heavy machinery, made good progress on the southwest corner of the fire yesterday. This part of the fire is in rugged terrain and has been very difficult to address. On the west flank of the fire, the lines held steady. On the north end, fire crews continued to hold the line across the top of the fire. On the eastern part of the perimeter, fingers of fire continued to burn through rough terrain. Crews in the area searched for opportunities to go direct when deemed safe and beneficial.

Operations: Today crews will work to keep the northernmost part of the fire within lines. The pinon-juniper fuels in the area will assist since they do not carry the fire as effectively as mixed conifer or ponderosa stands. Crews on the southwest perimeter will continue to go direct when possible to stop the flanking fire that has continued a slow but steady move westward.

On both the east and west sides of the fire, crews will continue to patrol the established lines to ensure quick response if the fire jumps the lines in those areas. On the north end of the fire, there remains the possibility the fire will jump the lines and move north into unburned fuels. Crews will continue to strengthen the lines in that area and quickly respond if the fire spots across the line.

Weather and Smoke: Critical fire weather continues today. It will be slightly less windy but record low humidity will persist for the next couple days. Humidity and a chance for precipitation may increase on Wednesday. Smoke will remain visible from surrounding areas, including the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Update from Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team:

Public Meeting: Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 2 will host a public meeting on Tuesday, August 5th at the Fredonia High School, 221 E Hortt Street, Fredonia, Arizona at 6 PM MST (Arizona Time). Speakers will include members of the team, and administrators from Kaibab National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park.

Highlights: Yesterday saw a return of near-critical fire weather. Low humidity recovery at night was followed by humidity dropping as low as 10% and wind gusts hitting 35 mph. Despite the poor firefighting weather, crews held the line they put in to the north where the fire is trying to skirt the 2023 Kane Fire.

On the west side of the fire’s perimeter, the control lines held except near the south end where the flanking motion of the fire continued. On the east side, there was very little activity. Firefighters on night shift walked sections of the fire’s eastern edge testing for heat to determine if more of the line can be declared contained.

Operations: The safety of firefighters and the public remains a top priority. On the southwest flank, the fire is approaching the 2003 Poplar Fire burn scar. A change in vegetation in the burn scar is primarily aspen which may slow the fire, allowing firefighters more opportunities to go direct.

Highlights: With yesterday’s higher humidity, firefighters saw a reduction in fire activity on many fronts, but critical fire weather will return today. On the SE corner of the fire, flanking fire moved farther to the west and crossed the bottom of the Crystal Creek drainage…On the remainder of the west side, containment lines continued to hold as the structure group reinforced defenses of values in that area. The east side of the fire saw very little growth as fuel types transitioned to pinon, juniper & sage. The NE section of the fire saw some growth around the west side of the burn scar from the 2023 Kane Fire. Ground crews were able to attack the fire directly with assistance from aircraft.

Operations: The strategy for the Dragon Bravo Fire remains full suppression. Crews will continue connecting, holding & reinforcing lines around the perimeter of the fire. Aircraft will continue to support them, particularly on the steep & rugged areas where ground crews cannot safely operate. In the SE corner and east sides of the fire, spike camps will be established to give crews a shorter drive time & longer work period. In the areas west of Kaibab Lodge, crews will button up the contingency lines they’ve put in along Forest Route 22. To the NE of the fire, crews will stay on the flats to engage and suppress the fire if it comes down from the rugged terrain.

On Walhalla Plateau, resources will protect cultural values. There is a possibility the fire will burn itself out when it reaches the scar from the 2018 Obi Fire.

Weather and Smoke: Today’s forecast includes a localized red-flag warning for the fire area. Wind gusts are expected to reach as high as 35 mph. There is no forecast for precipitation. Relative humidity will be very low at 8-12%. Smoke will remain visible from surrounding areas, including the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Update from 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire Information:

July 31, 2025
Acres: 105,415
Containment: 9%

Highlights: Today a localized red-flag warning is in effect for the Dragon Bravo Fire immediate area. Fuel moisture content is below that of kiln-dried lumber. Fire managers maintain the full suppression strategy on all fronts. In the north, where the fire is most active, crews continued to prep Forest Road 213 to the point where it drops off the plateau.

Beyond that point, aircraft dropped retardant to reinforce a ridgeline to tie into the road system on more favorable ground. Operations in the remainder of the uncontained perimeter crews looked for opportunities to do direct on the fire. Road crews were successful in clearing Point Imperial Road allowing firefighting crews access to the Walhalla Plateau, an area still closed to the public.

Operations: In the north and east, the fire is approaching a transition of fuels which could alter the progression of the fire. Work will continue in the north to reinforce what has already been accomplished on the 213 road. In the west, work will continue along Forest Road 22 west of State Route 67 to further protect the values in the area around Kaibab Lodge and the park entrance station.

The structure protection group is continuing to reinforce protection measures around values at risk near the Kaibab Lodge & in the House Rock area. Crews remain ready to respond rapidly to any developments that require their attention.

Weather & Smoke: The fire remains under the influence of a historic dry air mass. Relative humidity dropped to 10% as wind gusted over 25 mph across the fire area. Forecasts for today call for near identical conditions: hot, dry, & breezy…

We do have a very slight (10%) chance of stray showers that are not expected to drop any significant precipitation. SW winds will decrease slightly from Monday’s but continue to align with fuel beds, promoting fast spread & long duration burning periods. Smoke will remain visible from surrounding areas, including the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Residents & visitors impacted by the smoke are encouraged to monitor local air quality conditions here.

Evacuations & Closures:…The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will remain closed for the duration of the 2025 season.

U.S. Route 89A has reopened, though Grand Canyon Highway (State Route 67) remains closed. For info about the forest closure on the North Kaibab Ranger District, visit the Kaibab National Forest website. Kaibab Camper Village & Jacob Lake Inn & gas station are now open. The rest of the forest, including the Jacob Lake Campground, remains closed.

Update from Southwest Area Team 2:
Acres: 71,005
Containment: 9%

Another day of record conditions continues to push the Dragon Bravo Fire northeast

Latest Update: Monday was the fifth day in a row of record low humidity in the area. The alignment of slope, fuel and wind led to another day of extreme fire behavior. Monday, the fire pushed hard onto Kaibab National Forest lands to the northeast while other uncontained parts of the fire perimeter saw slow to no growth. Once again, fire and smoke conditions prevented infrared mapping of the fire, so actual acreage of the fire is currently undetermined. The containment percentage dropped again due to the growth of the fire’s perimeter.

Ongoing & Planned Operations: The strategy for fighting this fire remains full suppression. Firefighter and public safety remain top priorities. Unpredictable fire behavior requires crews to remain aware of and quickly respond to changes in their situation. Firefighters will continue their operations on the fire’s flanks to protect values at risk in the area.

Efforts are being made to keep the fire away from State Route 67. Ahead of the fire’s main advance, fireline leadership is working to identify natural and man-made features that can be strengthened and connected to form fire lines.

Latest Update: SW Area Complex Incident Management Team Two has taken command of the Dragon Bravo Fire on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Containment has decreased to 13% following updated perimeter mapping & recent fire growth. Yesterday saw a significant push 3 to 4 miles to the north, particularly on the western flanks. Spot fires were confirmed in North Canyon, and extreme fire behavior was observed with pyrocumulus columns developing to heights of 24,000 feet. While there was limited movement in the SE & SW corners, the northern runs were driven by continued SW winds & critically dry conditions.

Operations: The Dragon Bravo Fire is expected to continue pushing NE throughout today. Firefighters focus on active suppression, with safety as the top priority. Crews are encouraged to remain alert to rapidly changing conditions, as circumstances are increasingly challenged by terrain, fuels, & wind. Scouts will continue evaluating contingency lines along Forest Road 223 & adjacent meadows. Firefighters continue protecting values at risk. Crews continue structure & wildlife assessment and preparations in the House Rock area, NE of the fire. Firefighters maintain presence around the Kaibab Lodge & other infrastructure near the North Park Entrance, ensuring rapid response if needed...
