@sk76

I've heard about his studio ... "deeply ordered chaos" was the phrase used :))

There was an exhibition of Bacon's work at #ComptonVerney in Warwickshire a few years ago ... And it was there that I realised how much I like his paintings, much against my first impressions from years before. It was there also that I started to see the overall structures running through the paintings they'd been lent. The plainness of the backgrounds with the superimposed frameworks.

Such a complex man.

My favourite object at #ComptonVerney in their folk art collection.
Alfred Wallis.

A small painted metal tea tray in a clear glass display box mounted on a plain art gallery wall. The gallery is Compton Verney in Warwickshire. The painting is a naive depiction of a ship entering a harbour, likely St Ives, by Alfred Wallis.

I was on the project team the brought #ComptonVerney from the verge of ruin in about 1997 or so. I still go back periodically to wander the galleries and remember the challenges.

The refurbished Cafe at #ComptonVerney features my little man with three legs looking to all the world as if he is about to fall into a volcanic lava flow 👀

In the café at Compton Verney hang images extracted from their permanent art collection. Here we see two men in 18th century attire admiring at close range a stream of lava. One man sits. He appears to have three legs. One is actually a scroll but it adds to an illusion he is falling into the volcano.

We went to beautiful #ComptonVerney, #Warwickshire, today to see an #exhibition of #engravings by #JohnJamesAudubon, from his book: "The #BirdsOfAmerica".

I'd only seen two original Audubons before but today I saw 46!

Pic 1: a detail of the heads of the osprey and a fish it's just caught

Pic 2: a detail of an astonishing composition of Northern mockingbirds repelling a rattlesnake from their nest. 👈 This one was worth the price of admission alone.

Recommended!
