The first time I got to experience a full #MarkRothko exhibition, I genuinely wept. Also the 2d, and 3rd. The emotional intensity of his abstracts never fails to grip me, and I will always need a moment to collect myself afterward, and I will not really be interested in looking at anything else for a while.
And somehow, Dar Williams wrote a song about exactly that. This is "Mark Rothko Song." Here's my #coversong:

All the cool kids are singing Dylan again these days, right? Here's "Things Have Changed," which I seem to play differently every time I play it.

This week's #SundaySong doesn't sound exactly how I would have liked, but the point isn't to be perfect, the point is to be brave and put things out there. This is "Hospital" by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, performed on a distorted #UBass with some digital mellotron added in.

From 1973, one of those songs that just evokes a specific time and place for me. This is Jim Croce's "One Less Set of Footsteps."

Haven't done a Sunday Song in a while, but here's one to close out the year: The Raconteurs' "You Don't Understand Me," rendered on #ElectricUke through an amp modeler pedal.

Okay, it's no longer Sunday, but I forgot to post my #SundaySong, so here it is – a lowkey acoustic version of The Only Ones' "Another Girl, Another Planet." Have always loved this song but never thought it could work on a #uke until hearing an acoustic version in the movie "London Town" – which is also highly recommended.

I get very little traction for these performances on Mastodon, but I post them anyway, just because I need to keep putting myself out there. Here's a piano cover of Dan Hicks's "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away."

Another cover almost no one will know but that has stuck with me for decades—Jane Wiedlin’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Still learning how to sing this one but liked this enough to share it anyway.

This week's #SundaySong is Amanda Palmer’s “Ukulele Anthem,” one of the songs that reignited my interest in the #ukulele. It’s fun to sing but I can’t get quite relaxed with it. It’s rough, there are mistakes, etc., and that’s why I need to just put these takes out there. Play your ukulele!

For my #SundaySong this week, I did a quick cover of Hooverphonic's "Gravity," with just #ukulele and #kalaubass. Bit of work in #AbletonLive too.

For this week's #SundaySong, I just did the simplest cover of Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe." Me and keys and a little bit of compression in #abletonlive

Last week I got all up in my head. For this week's #SundaySong, I kept it very, very simple. This is "I Scare Myself," written by Dan Hicks (but more like the Thomas Dolby version).

Can't believe I've never posted a version of Cracker's "Big Dipper" before. This was one I struggled with mightily when first learning to play and sing, but for whatever reason it enchants me and I come back to it again and again. Non-minimalist approach here, with some layering in #AbletonLive. Sorry, the reverb is dripping. Maybe it'll be dry by next week.

My #SundaySong is going up on Saturday this week for reasons. This is a stripped down version of a Kurt Weill/Ogden Nash song told from the point of view of a statue of Venus that has come to life in the modern era. From the #musical "One Touch of Venus," this is "I'm A Stranger Here Myself."

A fellow open mic'er asked if I could accompany him on "Almost Blue," Elvis Costello's try at creating a jazz standard. Oh, them chords! Well, that encouraged me to get way, way out of my comfort zone, try to approximate some chords I'd never even heard of before, and sing a song I didn't think I could sing.

So, here's a try at "Almost Blue."

A super busy weekend, so I chose a song that needed a certain low energy approach – here's a cover of Florence + The Machine's "Long and Lost."

Just me and the piano, no post-production.

New #uke, who dis? Plays and sounds very different from my others, and I am not yet used to it, but I had a new way of doing Michael Nesmith's "Nine Times Blue" that I was determined to squeak out on this beautiful archtop, so here it is, warts and all. Also laid in some #kalaubass if you listen closely enough.

A real lo-fi, acoustic, direct-to-phone rendition of "I'll Survive" by Country Joe and the Fish. Practicing for a truly acoustic event next weekend – haven't played or sung without electronic help in quite some time.

When I performed #Cracker's "Been Around The World" at #openmic this week I started it in a voice and tempo I'd never even thought of before, and found myself locked in and liking it. I can't quite capture the energy I felt with that sound booming out into the room, but this isn't a bad approximation either. Added some #KalaUBass and guess what? One take on that. Having a good week with this song!

A little Brecht and Weill for your Sunday morning – an anti-war song written specifically for Lotte Lenya to record and have broadcast into Germany – this is "The Ballad of the Soldier's Wife."
