<p>Since macOS Ventura, if not in late releases of Monterey, macOS has been loading Safari and other parts of the operating system, including dyld caches, in cryptexes, instead of installing them in the Data volume. In addition to those, Apple silicon Macs with AI enabled load additional cryptexes to support its features. I <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2025/07/09/cryptexes-ai-and-creedence-clearwater-revival/">detailed those</a> for macOS 15.5 last summer; this article updates that information for macOS Tahoe 26.2.</p>
<h4>Cryptexes</h4>
<p>These first appeared on Apple’s customised iPhone, its Security Research Device, which uses them to load a personalised trust cache and a disk image containing corresponding content. Without the cryptex, engineering those iPhones would have been extremely difficult. According to its entry in the File Formats Manual from five years ago (<code>man cryptex</code>), ‘A cryptex is a cryptographically-sealed archive which encapsulates a well-defined filesystem hierarchy. The host operating system recognizes the hierarchy of the cryptex and extends itself with the content of that hierarchy. The name <em>cryptex</em> is a portmanteau for “CRYPTographically-sealed EXtension”.’</p>

<p>Several of those who have already updated to macOS Tahoe 26.2 have remarked how much larger their download was than the 3.78 GB expected for Apple silicon Macs, with some reporting over 10 GB. Here I ponder how that could happen.</p>
<h4>How is macOS now updated?</h4>
<p>My understanding of the broad processes involved in current macOS updates is that the total downloaded for Macs of the same architecture starting from the same version should be identical.</p>
<p>Major components required for each update include:</p>
<ul>
<li>contents of the System volume that have changed from the starting version for that update;</li>
<li>standard cryptexes containing Safari and its supporting components, and dyld caches. The latter differ between Intel Macs, which only receive Intel versions, and Apple silicon Macs, which receive Intel versions to support Rosetta 2 as well as their own Arm versions. Those probably account for much of the difference in size between Intel and Apple silicon updates. Note that Apple silicon Macs may also require updates to cryptexes used in AI, but those are most likely obtained outside the macOS update;</li>
<li>architecture-specific firmware;</li>
<li>new Recovery system;</li>
<li>the ‘update brain’ to run the update, including creation of the new SSV with its hash tree.</li>
</ul>

本來只是午餐時翻部看過的老電影來配，沒想到這次看發現了許多當年沒看到的片段（後來確知不是記憶缺失，而是Netflix上的是加長的「完整版」），實是意外收穫，不小心就一口氣看完了，算是自己的偷閒。

那種感動與情緒，其實是支撐自己很多興趣的根本來源，無論是寫作、歷史知識、旅遊…人的故事，永遠是那麼迷人。

Ian McKellen老爺子的演技真的沒話講，進到他的片段就能主導整場戲的推進；結尾的那段配樂覺得好讚，看完一查，果然是Hans Zimmer。

因為學生時代就看過原作，也在電影院看過院線版，這次看的時候就一直聚焦主角蘇菲，也因此意外看到電影版一些有趣的部分，特別是對她「靈性」的展現（有別於小說原作），公園癮君子、運鈔車裡對幽閉恐懼的治癒…都是，片尾那段用腳輕輕點水，真的很觸動人。

年輕時，認為《天使與魔鬼》優於《達文西密碼》，如今再看，修正了這個判斷，對《達文西密碼》的喜愛度以及受其影響的程度，應該都是丹布朗所有作品之最。
