I'm not sure how much factory farming is happening in DC.

"Earlier this year, the mayor indicated she would announce by June whether she’ll seek a fourth term, but June was three months ago, and Bowser still hasn’t said publicly what her plans are. When asked about it by reporters, she says that during these tumultuous times D.C. faces, it’s not the time to talk about her political future."

A bunch of people in tonight's march were chanting "Recall Bowser!" and I 100% sympathize, but citywide recalls in DC are nearly impossible. Plus if by a miracle it succeeded, it would cut only a few months off her time in office, and Mendelson would become acting mayor. Better to devote that time, energy, and money to something else—like a primary campaign against her, if someone steps up.

Five candidates have registered with the Federal Election Commission to run for DC delegate to the US House, all of them Democrats:

Eleanor Holmes Norton
Jerry McClairn Jr
Gordon Chaffin
Kinney Zalesne
Angel Anthony Rios

Only Norton has reported raising money, and it's only $8,000, plus a $40,000 loan from herself. So far no sign of Jacque Patterson, Kymone Freeman, or Nelson Rimensnyder.

Trayon White has officially returned to the DC Council that expelled him earlier this year. He won the special election with less than 28% of the vote.

In the Ward 8 special election, the votes that aren't for Trayon White's comeback are close to equally split among the other 3 candidates. There couldn't be a better demonstration of why we need ranked choice voting. I'm glad the funding for it passed its initial vote yesterday, and with luck this will be the last DC election we have without RCV.

We might get ranked choice voting in DC after all. Tomorrow's Ward 8 special election could be a demonstration of why we need it. bsky.app/profile/maustermuhle.

If the DC Council threatens to expel Trayon White again if he wins the special election, does that make Ward 8 voters more or less likely to vote for him?

Michael Murphy, a partner at the law firm Bailey & Glasser, is planning a run against Councilmember Charles Allen in the 2026 Democratic primary, challenging him on public safety. The fact that he's using an exploratory committee means he can't use Fair Elections, I believe. I really don't understand why exploratory committees even exist. They've always seemed like a scam.

Councilmember Brianne Nadeau (Ward 1) might not run for reelection. Possible candidates mentioned include Terry Lynch, Jackie Reyes-Yanes, Rashida Brown, and Ed Lazere.

I meant to post these earlier in the week for those followers who care about the DC Ward 8 special election. These are the approximate numbers of raw signatures on the nominating petitions filed by the candidates:

Trayon White 1,604
Salim Adofo 1,408
Sheila Bunn 1,079
Mike Austin 939
Doc Adams 708
Khadijah Clark 650
Kenneth Diggs 631
Eric Cleckley 518
Mary Roach 460
Charnal Chaney 281

The requirement is 500 valid signatures.

As if DC doesn't have enough troubles, we may not escape a Trayon White comeback after all. With around 18 candidates, if he makes it to the ballot it seems almost certain he'll get the plurality needed to win, even if it's only 25%.

The DC Board of Elections has declared a vacancy in the Ward 8 seat of the DC Council after the expulsion of Trayon White. The special election will be July 15. Nominating petitions will be available Feb 18.

The law firm hired to investigate Councilmember Trayon White found substantial evidence related to the bribery but couldn't show he doesn't live in Ward 8. This sets up a likely expulsion vote next month, followed by a special election a few months later that Trayon may well win if he runs and there are multiple opponents, which there almost certainly will be.

For a second consecutive election, the DC Board of Elections is unable to handle the fact that American University is split between two advisory neighborhood commissions. One ANC write-in candidate was only able to vote for herself by asking for a special ballot after being given the wrong one. Six other people wrote her in on ballots for the other district, though they may well live in her district.

You can't win an election in DC as a write-in unless you file a declaration of your candidacy (which you can do after the election). And you still have to get more votes than anyone else to win, even if the other person doesn't declare. Therefore, some ANC seats will remain vacant despite having declared write-in candidates. ANC 2A is saved from having Bruce Majors and Dennis Sobin (for how, at least). Sadly, 5C was not saved from Harry Thomas.
