Taika Waititi to Direct Judge Dredd Movie
The logline is being kept under the visor, but the pitch is said to take inspiration more from the comics than the previous screen iterations, leaning into the world-building and dark humor. It is also meant to be a fun sci-fi blockbuster that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture. The desire is to see the movie launch a Dredd universe that could be explored with additional movies and shows across various platforms.
I have never read the "2000 AD" comics.
I cannot speak authoritatively about Taika Watiti being selected to make this movie because I only tangentially know the source material. I just know its vibes and what I've read in online wikis.
I have seen both the Stallone "Judge Dredd" and the Karl Urban "Dredd" with the later being something of a legitimate masterpiece.
I've also played quite a bit of "Paranoia" as a youngster which seems to have a similar vibe to the comics. Is it like "Brazil"?
Taika had made films I really like such as "Hunt for the Wilderpeople", "What We Do in the Shadows", "Thor: Ragnarok". But he also made "Thor: Love and Thunder". I've not seen the one with Headmate Hitler so I can't speak to it.
What I'm saying is, he could do this justice, but whether or not he will remains to be seen.
I'd rather get a follow-up to "Dredd" with Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby's Judge Anderson.
