After a night of temptation and doubt, Buddha reached enlightenment just as Venus appeared in the morning sky.

Perhaps inspired by this, Jizen may have used the radish to symbolise the star, linking it to the overcoming of obstacles. The vegetable would come to be seen as a charm.

Daikon-daki coincides with the day Buddha reached enlightenment.
A monk from the temple called Jizen (慈禅上人), living some time in the Kamakura period, would draw the Sanskrit character for 'Buddha' on the end of radishes and distribute them as a prayer for good health.

Although many temples host 'daikon-daki' festivals throughout the winter, the origin of each celebration differs from place to place.
