I enjoyed , but the story of Baker the domineering creep, Pa the one-time (?) abuser, and Barry the powderkeg tells us that men may have decent attributes, but can erupt in violence at level of provocation dependent on their view of themselves as men in this world. Every man’s fatal flaw is formed the moment he’s told he’s a man with a certain set of privileges in our world.

FINALLY Joe is back.

That shot of Barry shaving in the attic…I guess escaping from a chain gang is no excuse to slack off personal grooming.

Where the heck is Joe? Did they only budget for so many days of dog wrangling during the shoot?

If Libby is Miranda, it seems like Ma is Prospero and Pa is Caliban. Of course, Joe is Ariel.

“I never called anyone darling, before.”

“I did, but I was a liar.”

That scene just after he gives her the revolver... Some great writing.

“How about Jeff being a nice man?”

“You’d better get used to me dropping in, Libby”

Every guy is is a first-rate creep, except for Barry.

“Hey, let me show you this picture of a hanging where I’m holding the noose”

Wait, has Ma been malingering this whole time? She just…gets out of bed? Now her marriage is saved because she can resume a place in the house? And what it took was Libby taking some time off? What about Pa hitting her? Is there accountability for that?

I mean, Barry is the first guy Libby encounters. He’s the Fernando to Libby’s Miranda. It would be nice if recognized that there’s an overtone of him exploiting her.

’s view of masculinity is just…a deep valley. It’s so remote to me, it’s like watching an Elizabethan drama. I would love a modern remake.#NoirAlley

It just takes the Right Man to cure a girl of her stutter.

Now they make a choice to give Barry a gun and make him talk tough. You see his basic decency come out right after, though. Is it because Libby is his manic pixie mountain girl? I wish his character were written & directed more subtly.

@LK_877 It says something about the culture that they had to have him take a swing at the guard rather than make another snide remark. “The world can’t hold him,” as Barker said, seems to imply violence rather than ideas.

They tried to establish Barry as a gentle, decent fellow when he gave the pup water. They could’ve kept him completely nonviolent, and made the cop the unreasonable, violent one. Would’ve made a contrast with Pa’s alleged past violence against Ma.

@mercurie only 30min in, wondering whether Ma or Libby is going to double cross someone.

@LK_877 The trope is strong in this one, but I do like how they use it to show the basic decency of Barry later on. Also glad the director didn’t have Pa Saul kick the dog.

It was wonderful seeing “Deep Valley” (1947) get the attention it deserves with the #NoirAlley showing this weekend. The last time an Ida Lupino acting role was featured on that program was four years ago!

I hope the next will be much sooner than that. Any chance they could get “Moontide” (1942) or “Road House” (1948)?
