On Human Rights Day, Detroit demands action, not complicity with U.S wars

Detroit, MI – Despite the chilly weather, over 50 people came to Hart Plaza to protest Trump’s wars and his agenda in commemoration of Human Rights Day, December 13.

As part of the rally, Daanyal Syed of Detroit Anti-War Committee stated, “This administration is bloodthirsty and looking to both plunder Venezuela for its oil and gold and use our tax dollars to stimulate the war economy. We know this because the very same war profiteers who profit off war with Venezuela have already made and continue to make millions off the genocide of Palestinians, the horrifying conditions in Sudan, in the Philippines, and across the world wherever the U.S. intervenes.”

#DetroitMI - "The Michigan Working Families Party is getting out the vote for these bold change-makers who will serve the people rather than corporations. Both members of the Democratic Socialists of America, #DenzelMcCampbell and #GabrielaSantiagoRomero are running against #CorporateDemocrats.

The #WorkingFamiliesParty’s Neighborhood Captains program has mobilized Detroiters to encourage their neighbors to vote.

In addition to knocking on doors and making phone calls, these captains have hosted neighborhood events to discuss issues and build relationships with their neighbors. This is an important step toward long-term community-based relational organizing that regularly engages voters in issues that impact them.

Denzel has led campaigns for justice and equity, voting rights and campaign finance reform, and responsive governments that co-govern with constituents. He is running against a State Representative who has voted with Republicans against paid family leave, against raising the minimum wage, and against public school funding—while failing to protect reproductive rights.

Detroit is one of the poorest cities in the country, so its residents deserve elected leaders who serve the working class. Denzel and Gaby are running for Detroit City Council to make housing and healthcare affordable, protect immigrants and other vulnerable residents, hold corporate polluters accountable, and push for a budget that centers community investment.

Gaby, who’s running for re-election, hit the ground running in her first term on the council. She secured funding to keep Detroiters in their homes and to support first-time homeowners, passed a policy to protect Detroiters from industrial pollution, and created a successful Community Violence Intervention program. She’s also offering “know your rights” trainings for immigrants and championing policy to limit local police cooperation with ICE."
