"May 13, 2025
When it comes to the fate of the Palestinians, all eyes are on Gaza. But in the meantime, Israel is seizing more and more land on the West Bank, often with brute force. Today, the UN is sounding the alarm: the threat of famine is growing. Louis Theroux followed this settler movement in his latest documentary ‘The Settlers’, about the illegal settlements on the West Bank. Former Middle East correspondent Sander van Hoorn and comedian Raoul Heertje have already seen the documentary and joined us to talk about it.
'The Settlers' is a 2025 BBC documentary by Louis Theroux, in which he returns to the West Bank to investigate the growing influence of Israeli settlers. He speaks to settlers, religious leaders and Palestinians to gain insight into daily life in the region. The film shows how settlements have expanded and how this development is linked to politics, religion and security in the area. Theroux visits Hebron and Masafer Yatta, among other places, and paints a picture of the tensions between different population groups.
Theroux himself says: “If you are shocked by my film about the Israeli settlers on the West Bank, then you have not been paying attention lately.” Sander van Hoorn completely agrees. He has seen these developments with his own eyes in Israel. According to him, the settlers operate very strategically: first a road is built, then a power line, then the area is declared a military zone and they receive support from the military. In this way, they take over the area step by step.
In 2017, Raoul Heertje made the documentary ‘Het Israël van Heertje en Bromet’ together with Frans Bromet. In it, he spoke with Daniella Weiss, one of the main characters in Theroux’s documentary. According to Heertje, Weiss believes that God promised a large piece of land to the Jews, including parts of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and of course the Palestinian territories. In the past, people like Weiss were dismissed as extremists or ‘crazy’, Heertje explains, but that image is now outdated: this is no longer a marginal problem. The Israeli government systematically participates in land theft.
Sander van Hoorn adds that Daniella Weiss sincerely believes that the land belongs to her and her people. In her experience, she does not steal anything. This belief is also widely shared and spread within Israel. Heertje says that when he lived in Israel himself, people like Weiss were still an exception. At that time, people also openly spoke of ‘occupied territories’ when referring to the West Bank, among other things. According to him, things are different now: the ideology of the settlers has now become mainstream and is reflected in the policy of the Israeli government. He warns that our own government must also face this problem. “According to every rule there is, these are crimes, but no one does anything.”
Vincent Karremans was also at the table and was asked as a member of the cabinet about the position of the Dutch government. Although he showed understanding for the anger and incomprehension, he remained reserved in his response, because this subject would not fall under his portfolio. Sander van Hoorn addressed him on this and asked whether Minister Veldkamp's vision on Israel had any influence on the debate in the House of Representatives. Karremans repeated that this is not his portfolio.
Sander van Hoorn
Sander van Hoorn is a Dutch journalist and former correspondent for the NOS in the Middle East. From his base in Tel Aviv, he reported on the complex political and humanitarian situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories for many years.
Raoul Heertje
Raoul Heertje is a Dutch comedian, writer and programme maker. He was one of the founders of the satirical television programme 'Dit was het nieuws' and in 2017, together with Frans Bromet, he made the documentary 'Het Israël van Heertje en Bromet'. With his Jewish background and personal involvement, Heertje knows how to make complex themes such as identity, politics and religion accessible and confrontational to discuss.
