1️⃣5️⃣ If poverty blocks the sky…
If bad law clouds the horizon…
If despair dulls motivation…

Then there’s less looking up.
Less discovery of the moon.
Slower solving of the next great challenges.

Agency is substantially diminished when survival is in question.

John Angell James, Congregationalist minister in England, writes on Christian charity. Daily performance of little good, bad deeds changes the character of a neighborhood.

Most Americans don’t know their neighbors and are more likely to meet them at the courthouse. Many may be expecting gold stars from God simply for being a non-negative neighbor who keeps to themselves. But what kinds of good could you do every day?

"The daily, and almost hourly reciprocity of little acts of good or ill will, which we have an opportunity of perfor-ming, go a great way to the making up of good or bad neighbourhood."

Aaron Burr’s cousin writes on the Last Judgment from Matthew 25. He says our mercy is not the only criteria by which humans are accepted or rejected by God. But it is the foremost in human excellence and divine estimation. Its opposite is the highest in divine abhorrence.

A pastor in my youth wouldn’t allow any interpretation like this : it was just nope to socialism and nope to works righteousness. Really, no meaning.

"We know, indeed, from numerous declarations, made by himself, that mercy is not the only thing, required of men by the will of God; nor the only thing, regarded by the Judge in the acceptance, or rejection, of men at the great day. But we are clearly taught in this account, that mercy holds the foremost place in human excellence, and in the divine estimation; and that the contrary character is the most odious depravity, and preeminently the object of the divine abhorrence."
