The proper Music of the Sub instantly makes a difference.
When I said I liked the VAs in the 4kids versions, I mainly meant the girls. All the male characters instantly sound way better in the Sub.

Well I've finished Mew Mew Power and I gotta say calling the Tokyo Tower "City Tower" is kinda funny.
It's a shame it ended on a direct cliff hanger. I was gonna take a break before picking up with the Sub first (that usually makes adjusting to different voices easier) but now I wanna see what happens next.
Okay I thought I was on episode 17 of Tokyo Mew Mew but suddenly they are flashing back to something I don't recall. Did the order of the 4kids version get mixed around again?
So I've finally put my finger on why the Musical choices of the 4 Kids Tokyo Mew Mew localization bug me.
I spend a lot of time after watching a Magical Girl show also seeking out any old Abridged Series that were made. And in those playing an American Pop Song during the Transformation scene is one of the most common Jokes.
So 4kids playing their mid-00s Pop Rock songs over these transformations feels like a Parody to me.
Well I just watched Cardcaptor Sakura episode 14.
Mackerel now always makes me think of Frenda similar to how Chickpeas make me think of Ezra Fitz.

So it looks like the first Cardcaptor Sakura movie should be watched between episodes 18 and 19.
I think it was a mistake to classify Rayearth as Episodic in the first place.
I'm already unsure I like where season 2 is going.
Alright I've finished season 1 of Magic Knight Rayearth now, it's Good.
First of all I decided before reaching the end that it shouldn't actually be classified as a Magical Girl Show. The fact is a lot of the Qualia of the Magical Girl Genre is mutually exclusive with being an Isekai. Now Reverse Isekai is a different story.
They only look like Magical Girls as much as they do because they're wearing their Magic JRPG Armor over their School Uniforms.
But most importantly, whether or not someone like me is judging the show as a Magical Girl Show effects how I judge it, the standards and rules I tend to hold that Genre to greatly effects how Okay I'm willing to be with how it ends, or how season 1 ends.
However the show's biggest weakness as a Fantasy show is the failure to make this "Secondary World" feel at all lived in. There's only one episode where they visit a Town and not much happens in it.
In that context it falls shot of even the most Generic and Unimaginative of modern Isekai and Quasi Isekai that so many see as inherently disgraces to the Legacy of Classic Shoujo Isekai like Rayearth. These modern Isekai may not do much to distinguish their Discount Dragon Quest worlds and towns from each other, but they do more then enough to feel like living worlds worth fighting for.
It looks like this issue may be fixed by Season 2 which I'll be starting soon. But some effort should have been put in at the start.
I know to a lot of people the Slice of Life downtime in certain Fantasy Shows kills their "urgency". But to me the Ugrency means nothing if you fail to convince me there even is a world to Save.
Well I've now watched episode 7 and it's definitely finding it's footing.
Loved the Jurassic Park reference.
Only reason I have trouble memorizing their names is that they all seem to be names that are pretty common in Anime.
And who's Spock and who's McCoy is still lining up with what I suggested last time.
I have been very critical of the implementation of the original Music in this 4kids Tokyo Mew Mew localization, but i do have a desire to try listening to these songs on their own.
However it seems like they never released a Mew Mew Power CD like they did for Pokémon.
Returning to the subject of Tokyo Mew Mew as an influence on future Magical Girl Stuff. Perhaps it influenced the Live Action Sailor Moon with the whole Fifth Member being an Idol thing.
At anyrate the 4kids version has now caught up to it's pseudo pilot.

Going off 5 episodes so far, the face value assumption be that the Red Hair is Kirk and the girl with Glasses Spock and the Blue Haired one McCoy.
I'm expecting the Blue Haired one to be the Kuudere at first, but that's an expectation I had mostly mostly based off stuff more recent then this show.
Well I have now watched all 18 episodes of Corrector Yui that were Dubbed into English.
Well the Dub Viz Media released recorded in the Philippines, there may be another Canadian Dub out there but it's not on the usual sites I use.
Turns out the show wasn't airing at the turn of the Millennium. It seems shows that aired before MAL sometimes get to be all 1 MAL entry even if there was a hiatus.
The 26 episodes where Katsuyuki Sumisawa was the head writer aired from April to October of 1999 and then the Satoru Nishizono episodes aired from April to October of 2000.
So episode 7 turned out to be pretty good, even in it's 4kids version (where it's the 8th episode).
What's fascinating about Corrector Yui is that of all the Anime airing on Japanese TV at the turn of the Millennium this one feels like the most spiritually correct to call the First Anime of the 21st Century.
As a Magical Girl Warrior Anime it feels the most like a proto Pretty Cure of any pre 2004 Mahou Shoujo for reasons I might be coving on my Blog in the near future.
And as an Anime featuring Full Dive Virtual Reality it may not be the very first but it presents it as a casual every day thing in an otherwise mostly contemporary feeling world before SAO .Hack or the 6th Detective Conan movie in 2002.
The most frustrating part of watching the 4kids version of Mew Mew is all the extra ad breaks edited in.
I don't get it, they didn't do that to Pokemon?
Episodes 5 and 6 of Corrector Yui was it's first two prater and also a very typical Neoliberal take on Environmentalism.
Main reason this show interests me is being the only Magical GIrl show with Katsuyuki Sumisawa as the head writer. After he wrote so many of my favorite Sailor Moon One Offs I'm curious to see how him actually being in charge could hold up.
I quickly got tired of that series. I'll put them all back On Hold.
But they are still shows I recommend checking out.
The Flaw in that plan was that the Receptiveness of watching a bunch of MOTW Magical Girl episodes in succession is not really lessened by jumping around between different ones.
Instead after getting genuinely curious to see what happens next in the first couple shows my mind lost the ability to shift gears to another show.
So I'll keep going with those for now and play it by ear later.

Magic Knight Rayearth I'm for now choosing to have faith is simply one of those shows awkward in the very early episodes. In fact episode 2 already felt better paced.
Episode 11 of Cardcaptor Sakura does that thing where they say Sakura looks like her mother even though she really doesn't.
The non Cardcaptors dub of Sakura is surprisingly good. These Duds recorded in South East Asia get a bad rap but right now I prefer how this sounds to recent Maimi based Dubs.
