We are roughly at the “you are here” place on the right, we won't take the North high route but the secret forest paths to Narasuwa ice cave in the center, and then it's straightforward #famouslastwords to the opposite side of lake Shōji on the left.

I am at the ice cave, one third of the way to tomorrow's hotel, posting from the souvenir shop WiFi. I optimized the path so much, discovering several perfect paths through the forest that aren't shown either on OpenStreetMap nor on the local tourist maps. And I may optimize it even more on the way back! This may only take 1h40min tomorrow, leaving plenty of time for mistakes and suboptimal choices for the remaining 2/3 of the way. Also the remainder of tomorrow's walk is a path shown on both local tourist maps and OpenStreetMap so surprises are unlikely there #famouslastwords
