#FeM

@lwilde and I are currently planning to build a magnetron sputter setup. Since i learned that #freecad also is includes #FEM functions I want to try and model the magnetic field of the magnetron. I managed to get very simple geometries to work but quickly got stuck on more involved once.

Does someone know a nice guide which explains how to properly design 2D geometry for FEM simulation. Or maybe can explain to me what the operation in the red circle is, which is used in the examples?

Screenshot of the freecad view-port showing the "Magnetostatic - ELmer 2D" example. On the top of the image a bunch of icon and menus can be seen. The left side shows the tree-style overvie of the model parts. The model it self is shown in the center and consicst of a large white circle with the cross section of a horseshoe magnet.A screenshot only showing the tree-style drop down menu of the model in freecad. The differed elements are "BooleanFragments", "Lower_end", "Upper_End", "Horseshoe_U", "Cut_Air".Screenshot from the software ParaView showing a cos section of the magnetic flux density of a ring magnet. The vector field is shown with small arrows which are plotted above a color gradient for the field strength.

Solving sparse finite element problems on neuromorphic hardware

nature.com/articles/s42256-025

Free preprint arxiv.org/abs/2501.10526

As you solve partial differential equations without noticing with every move you make this is really useful problem solving #ai

As the number of people understanding #FEM (finitite element methods) actually is small this will not be exagarated as #llm.

Because there are more idiots who can talk than engineers who can calculate

If one has a linear-elastic material in mind, one would assume this works for any kind of finite element simulations. In case of large rotations and large strains, "linear" is not unique. There are many different implementations of linear-elastic materials. Beside the mathematical details, a cube, rotated by 90° and stretched to a factor of 2, will show different deformations. You'll see a small-strain, Total-Lagrange (Saint-Venant Kirchhoff material) and the co-rotated framework as well as a compressible Neo-Hookean material model formulation.

Reminder: don't use small-strain linear-elastic material formulations in simulations where large rotations occur - just because the strains are "small".

All figures created by #felupe for simulation and #pyvista for plotting.

Ruth Holliday and
Jacqueline Sanchez Taylor argue that ideology in the West has actually promoted
the notion that “false” beauty is bad because it is sinful while “natural” beauty is
good because it has traditionally signified obedience and passivity (2006). This
has led to a culture where the “masked” woman is seen in negative terms:
Women who paint their faces usually do so for seduction – using sexuality to
confuse men, usually with some ulterior motive in mind. Women using make-
up are thus bad women, as opposed to unpainted good women. So naturally
beautiful women are good, falsely beautiful made-up women are bad – bad
because they have a sexuality.

These kinds of works, with validation against experimental results, is always a challenging task, even for the simpler problems. Lab experiments and numerical simulations have each their own set of problems that need to be addressed, and the people working on the two sides of the fence often have a very different perspective on what should be considered trivial and not worth measuring, and what is instead crucial to the success of the experiment.

Getting these two sides to talk to each other successfully is no walk in the park, and I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to Vito Zago, who has gone to incredible lengths both during the “science making” to make things work out, and during the manuscript submission and review process, a nearly Sisyphean task in itself.

I Wonder where the developers are! These would be awesome to have do a talk.
Same for the "process signal, but *fast*" people; top of my head, we've got @rygorous , but he's more on the "fast" than on the signals side. We have @mkretz who could talk about C++ SIMD stuff, but my guess: he'd prefer to talk in a room full of compileristas?
Are /#Heavi people here? It'd seem gets a lot of well-deserved attention combing physics+signals, but it's not the sole toolkit!

I made a #streamlit app for a nonlinear #fea simulation of a deformable hyperelastic solid body. This uses #FElupe for the simulation and #pyvista / #stpyvista for showing the final result in your browser.

@jeffowski Just some quick thoughts...

1. The “michaelandwicket” account is spot on.

2. It's hard to say, unless you're really into this sort of stuff, about the present degree of continued Russian troll and bot operations, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that's what this was.

3. I'm so *very* glad to not be on Twitter.

🚀 I’ve been working on HierBEM, a 3D Galerkin boundary element method (BEM) library. It uses hierarchical matrices (\(\mathcal{H}\)-matrices) for near log-linear complexity.

🔧 Built on deal.II, written in C++ with CUDA acceleration. Still early in development, but it could already be useful — and might serve as a nice supplement to deal.II.

💡 Feedback and thoughts are very welcome!

What’s new in FEM for FreeCAD 1.1?
Now that the feature freeze for FreeCAD 1.1 is on, and we are not too far off from the final release, let’s summarize the main changes in the FEM workbench. Just like in the case of the revolutionary 1.0.0 release (see this blog post), FEM dominates the release notes. There have been many significant improvements, so let’s go through them.

After a summerbreak, #FElupe development continues! Stay tuned for lots of handy new features: checkpoint/restore, revolve a.k.a. axi-to-3d, simplified handling of multiple solid bodies, etc. These new features are already available in the main git branch and will be released soon.
